The Dec 29, 1903 date was reported by his mother. That is what Sam and his family always celebrated, and is considered to be the correct date. Sam was the son of Harry Woodson and Mary Davis Hinkle. Harry was a farmer near Frankford, WV. Sam was a Greenbrier Co school teacher for 37 years, teaching as many as eight grades at a time in one and two room country schools. Sam was married to Cathleen on Jun 18, 1930 by Minister of the Gospel William T Hodges at the home of relatives, M & E Johnson. He is remembered especially for teaching at Fry Elementary School on Muddy Creek Mountain, west of Lewisburg, where he taught early in his career and again at the end of his career. He was a teacher not only in life but also in death, as he had his body donated to the WV School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg. His ashes were then interred in the mausoleum at Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg. Sam was a very faithful Methodist all of his life, and served as both Sunday School superintendent and teacher. He had a perfect Sunday School attendance record for 30 years. When he was hospitalized for appendicitis, his Sunday School class met in his hospital room, thus maintaining his perfect attendance for that year. In his retirement years, he took up weaving and made many rag rugs. Sam and Cathleen had a son who was a veterinarian and two daughters, one of whom, with her husband, were career missionaries. They also hosted many foster children in their home and adopted one such child. The Hinkles are also fondly remembered by next-generation friends who were guests in their homes, whether overnight or for extended stays. The log home near Asbury where they lived in the 1940s-1950s is at 37.828826, -80.550940. A barn with a cistern and a small power generator building which supplied electricity to their home once stood across the road.
