Aurner, was drowned in the Cedar about thirty rods below the railroad bridge north of town, at about 4 o'clock Sunday. He had gone 'in swimming' with two of Mr. Dempsey's boys and Joe Crouse. Crouse and the two Dempsey's started to swim across the river to the opposite shore. While Aurner was still wading in the shallow water he called to the other boys saying he was drowning. The boys looked back and they knew he was fooling. Afterwards he stepped into a hole about nine feet deep. The boys saw him go down but were afraid to go to his assistance as they were all small and the older Dempsey boy is a cripple. They gave the alarm and in about thirty minutes after he had drowned the body was taken out by Geo. True. The coroner, Dr. Jungblut was telephoned to at Tripoli, but no answer was received from him, so A. M. Potter, J. P. acting as coroner summoned a jury consisting of F. G. Clark, L. C. Haase and Dr. W. M. Barber and held an inquest. Ed Winnte, J. M. Bessmer and John Dempsey were heard as witnesses and their testimony corresponds with the facts above related, after which the jurors found a verdict of accidental drowning. The funeral was Tuesday from the parent's home, Rev. N. Pye and Rev. Ellis M. Jones officiating. The remains were taken to the Jefferson Cemetary for burial. Cecil was fifteen years of age. The grief stricken parents and brothers and sisters have the heartfelt sympathy of the community. The Waverly Republican August 9, 1894 Obituary Cecil Ray, son of Thomas J. and Angie Auner was born near New Hartford, in Butler county, February 14th 1879. The following October his parents moved to Dakota where his mother was taken sick and died in one short year. The bereaved father brought his motherless boy to Jefferson, Iowa, where for two years he lived with his grandparents, afterwards residing with his father in Jefferson until Nov. 28, 1893, when he came to Waverly. He was a boy of general good habits, goodnatured and a lover of little children. As a scholar he was very bright. In the absence of his parents he went to drive some cattle off the railroad track which led him in the vicinity of the river into which he waded and got out of his depth resulting in his drowning. The funeral occurred at his father's house Tuesday at 12:30 with interment at Jefferson. The service was conducted by Rev. E. M. Jones and Rev. N, Pye.
