Description	:	"Celia Vida Lee married James Oscar Hardwick on January 24, 1934. Mama was born July 24, 1912, the daughter of Andrew and Hattie Cook Lee. She was a graduate of Aynor HS (salutatorian) where she played basketball. Although she won a scholarship to Winthrop she could not go because it was in the middle of the Depression, she was number 4 of 12 children, and there was no money. Read More	"Celia Vida Lee married James Oscar Hardwick on January 24, 1934. Mama was born July 24, 1912, the daughter of Andrew and Hattie Cook Lee. She was a graduate of Aynor HS (salutatorian) where she played basketball. Although she won a scholarship to Winthrop she could not go because it was in the middle of the Depression, she was number 4 of 12 children, and there was no money. She started teaching school when I was in the first grade (1943). In those days this was allowed with a temporary teaching certificate. Mama took extension courses, drove to Columbia on Saturdays with Thurman Anderson and Burman Jones (to attend USC), and took courses from Coastal Carolina Univ. after it opened - finally she obtained the equivalent of a masters degree. All this time she was teaching school (sometimes making books when there were none), cooking our meals, helping on the farm, and making most of the clothes for my sister and me. Mama was an excellent seamstress - she bought good material, could copy any design, and alter patterns so that clothes fit us perfectly. She was also a great cook. At some point in the 1970s they bought a motel at Myrtle Beach. Daddy and Mama were both strong believers in education - I don't remember a discussion but we children knew we were going to college. Perhaps because nobody got sick, we all did obtain college degrees. We learned that we could do anything with hard work and persistence. They kept us grounded - and at the same time - gave us wings. Daddy died on July 15, 1971 and in 1982 Mama married Wilbur D (Bill) Hopkins. Bill had a son Malcolm. Mama died April 27, 2000. She and Daddy are buried at Poplar." - MHL
