[Poplar was a circuit with three other churches - so the preacher came only one Sunday per month]. He had a wonderful disposition and was frequently smiling. We children had to work, but my cousins adored him - he allowed them to eat his watermelons, play in the barns, and entertained us all with his harmonica. Daddy was an excellent farmer and when he could no longer make a living on a small farm he turned to carpentry - something he had always done anyway. One of my earliest memories is of reading the Bible and praying each night before going to bed. He was quiet and led by example. In the early 1930s he helped dig the Inter Coastal Waterway. On Jan. 24, 1934 Oscar married Celia Vida Lee. Mama was born July 24, 1912, the daughter of Andrew Lee and Hattie Cook. At some point in the 1970s they bought a motel at Myrtle Beach. Daddy and Mama were both strong believers in education - I don't remember a discussion but we children knew we were going to college. Perhaps because nobody got sick, we all did obtain college degrees. We learned they we could do anything with hard work and persistence. They kept us grounded - and at the same time - gave us wings. Daddy died on July 15, 1971 and in 1982 Mama married Wilbur D (Bill) Hopkins. Bill had a son Malcolm. Mama died April 27, 2000. She and Daddy are buried at Poplar." - MHL
