[calculated birth date] [Empire City was a bustling port of call that occupied a portion of Coos Bay's waterfront.] Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 16 Dec 1880 p3: SAD DEATH OF A DOVER BOY IN OREGON---The sad intelligence of the death of Charles B. Lougee, has lately been received by his parents in this village [Dover], Mr. and Mrs. George Lougee. It took place in Empire City, Oregon, on Sunday morning, Nov. 21st, last. Young Lougee as many of our citizens will remember, left his home over sixteen years ago, nearly all of which time he has spent at the above place, where he won many warm friends, and 'left not an enemy in that country,' as a private letter to the family states. Deceased came to his death by accident, having slipped and fell from a wharf, dislocating his neck. We were very intimately acquainted with young Lougee when a youth, and always found him a firm, true-hearted friend and companion. He was possess of many fine traits of character, and was always a special favorite among his associates. The news of his death has fallen very heavily upon the parents, who are now getting along in years, and their's [sic] has been a household of mourning since the receipt of the sad intelligence. In another place in this paper may be found an article copied from the Pacific Coast Ranger, doubtless written by a personal friend of deceased, whose sentiments are very beautiful and appropriate."
