Swindell Enters Into Rest Subtitles: Prominent Farmer of Silver Creek and Former County Supervisor Funeral On Monday Was Born Feb. 22, 1856 on Home Farm where His Death Occurred Charles A. Swindell, pioneer of Adams township, and one of the outstanding citizens of the Silver Creek community, passed away at his home Saturday, November 16th, 1935, following an illness of comparatively brief duration. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Silver Creek on Monday forenoon, at ten o'clock. Burial was made in the Silver Creek cemetery. Rev. F. C. Griewe, former pastor of the church, and now of Laurel, Iowa, was in charge of the services, and paid a fitting tribute to the life and character of Mr. Swindell. He was assisted in the services by Rev. Hahn of Geneva, Iowa; and Rev. Mr. Coover of Masonville. The church was crowded with sorrowing friends, who came to pay their last tribute of respect to Mr. Swindell. Among those from a distance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Swindell of Des Moines; Mrs. Mary A. Swindal, of Brooklyn, Iowa; Miss Blanche Swindell of Hinsdale, Ill.; and Miss Lucy Swindell of East Chicago; Mrs. Margaret Johnston of Wheaton, Ill.; and Senator Byron W. Newberry of Strawberry Point. Mr. Swindell was born in a log cabin, erected by his parents when they came to Delaware county, on February 22nd, 1856. He was a son of Wm. Swindell and Isabelle Carrothers Swindell, pioneers of the state of Iowa. He grew to manhood on the home farm where his death occurred. He received his early education in the rural schools, and completed his education in Upper Iowa university. After completing his schooling he taught school in Adams township for a year. In 1876, the year of the Philadelphia Centennial exposition, he went east, stopping in Philadelphia for nine days, visiting the great exposition. He went to New York City from Philadelphia, and engaged in business, and remained there until 1903, when he returned to Iowa and Delaware county to take charge of his father's farm. On March 4th, 1881, he was united in marriage with Miss Ida A. Liepsner, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chas. T. Liepsner, of New York City. To this union was born one son, Charles W. Swindell, who resides at home. On May 4th, 1931, Mr. and Mrs. Swindell celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, a happy occasion when a great company of their friends came to the home to greet the worthy couple. Mr. Swindell was elected a member of the Board of Supervisors of the county at the fall election of 1914, and served this county in that capacity until 1923. Mr. Swindell was identified with various business interests of the county, and had been a devout member of the Methodist church of Silver Creek, and an officer in the organization. Until very recently he was the inspiring teacher of a large Bible class in the church. Mr. Swindell was a member of a large family, three of whom live after him. In his immediate family surviving him are the widow, the son, his niece, Miss Blanche Swindell, who lived in her uncle's home; his brother, W. B. Swindell of Minatare, Nebraska; and his two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnston, of Coggon; and Mrs. Ann Swindel, of Brooklyn, Iowa; together with a large number of nieces and nephews. A brother and a sister passed away in infancy, and two other sisters, Mrs. Margaret Johnston, died in 1896, and Mrs. Francis Scanlon, died in 1929, and two brothers, Anthony and John H. Swindell, died in 1932. In the death of Mr. Swindell Delaware county loses a real pioneer, and the Silver Creek community a most loyal and upright citizen. During the years he served Delaware county as a supervisor he gave to the county liberally of his time in furthering the interests of the people who elected him to office. He was conscientious and thorough-going in every business transaction. Mr. Swindell will be greatly missed by the large circle of friends he had not only in the community of Silver Creek, but by friends he had in all parts of the county. These friends sympathize sincerely with the widow and son, in the sorrow that has come to them at his time.
