The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Ballard officiating. The G.A.R. Post of Richmond of which he was a member, gave a beautiful ritual of that order, more than 30 old soldiers were present. Charles A. C. Church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Ballard officiating. The G.A.R. Post of Richmond of which he was a member, gave a beautiful ritual of that order, more than 30 old soldiers were present. Charles A. C. Howren, son of Willis and Mary Howren, was born at Liberty, Union Co., IN on Sept. 13, 1848 and died Apr. 12, 1914, aged 67 years, 6 months and 20 days. At the age of 5 years, he suffered the loss of his father and a year later removed with the rest of the family to Dublin in 1852, at which place they made their home until 1862, when they moved to New Lisbon. In 1862, he enlisted in his country's cause as a drummer boy in Company A, 84th Regiment. The hardships and privations of army life soon took a toll on his health and compelled his return home after 7 months service in the field. Later he received an honorable discharge. The patriotism that sent the boy to battle grew with the man, and through his entire life, he allowed nothing to hinder him from attending the annual gatherings of his comrades both of company and regiment. He loved his flag and on every occasion manifested that love by raising over his own doorway the star and stripes of 'Old Glory'. The drum beats of the faraway battle he carried in his heart through life, and in death it is his to be wrapped in the mantle of his country. He was united in marriage to Sarah V. Huddleson on Oct. 27, 1887 in Dublin. To this union was born one child, Lillian May, who with the wife and mother survive. The life of the deceased was spent in a business capacity. In 1868, he and his wife removed to Millville where he engaged in the drug, grocery and lumber business for 20 years. In 1888, he returned to New Lisbon where he engaged in the drug and grocery business until 1889, when failing health compelled him to give up his usual indoor work. At this time, he removed to Dublin and engaged in the livery business. Having partially regained his health in this way, he again resumed the drug and grocery business, in which he continued until the close of his life. The last 5 years, he was severely afflicted with heart disease. In his sufferings he bore himself with fortitude and made a brave fight with life until it was evident the end was not far distant. He them resigned himself to the inevitable and quietly fell asleep. He leaves to follow a faithful and loving wife, a daughter, a sister, two nephews: H. R. Nation of Lancaster, PA and W. H. Nation of Muncie, and many relatives and friends who while they mourn for his loss, are sustained by the thought that: "Though hearts and homes are broken, God's word is ever true; He cares when the sparrows falleth, He lives and cares for you."
