Charles Albert Bilkey, 68, proprietor of The Hub, Gents Furnishing Goods Store on Broadway near Second, and one of the most widely known merchants in this section, died yesterday morning at 4:20 at his home 225 Chestnut street. Although Bilkey had been in poor health for several years, he was at his store Thursday of last week and seemed in normal health at that time. Saturday morning he submitted to a slight operation on one foot and for a time appeared to be rallying satisfactorily. Later he lapsed into unconsciousness and so remained until death came. Bilkey was born in Forest Hill, Placer county, in October, 1859. When he had grown to manhood he entered the mercantile business in his native town and later served as postmaster for several years. Still later he served two terms as auditor and recorder of Placer county. In 1902 he came to Chico and entered the clothing business with W.H. Zwisler in the building now occupied by the C.A. Andrews clothing store on Second street. Later he moved to the location now occupied by The Hub. He was a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge No. 16 and the Covenant Lodge of I.O.O.F. of Forest Hill. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Mary E. Bilkey; a brother, J.H. Bilkey of Oakland and two half brothers R.C. Williams of Berkeley and C.S. Williams of Placerville. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the chapel of the Bicknell & Moore funeral home, the Rev. R.S. Eastman of the Red Bluff Presbyterian church, officiating in the chapel and the local lodge of Masons at the graveside. Burial will be made in the Chico cemetery.
