Description	:	Charles was the first child born to Theresa McLaren & Joel Swinehart, being born in Adair, IA. He would have been 5 yrs old when his parents uprooted their young family and moved to California in 1898 to live for 3 years near the mining town of Dutch Flats in the gold rich country east from Sacramento. They returned to IA in 1901. Charles married Emma Aupperle Swinehart in 1920 and from that union they had 2 children: Roma b. 1921 Dale b. 1923. My mother recalls how terrible Grampa Charlie took the death of Em in 1941 from cancer. He experienced some... Read More	Charles was the first child born to Theresa McLaren & Joel Swinehart, being born in Adair, IA. They returned to IA in 1901. Charles married Emma Aupperle Swinehart in 1920 and from that union they had 2 children: Roma b. 1921 Dale b. 1923. My mother recalls how terrible Grampa Charlie took the death of Em in 1941 from cancer. He experienced some very down times. He found a wonderful widow, Irma Patterson whom he married in abt 1954 and they lived in a lovely older home in Atlantic, IA until she preceded him in death and he later moved to Eugene, OR to live in both homes of my parents and my Uncle Dale's until his death there in 1981. He is buried near the spot where his life began, Adair, IA. Grampa Charlie loved to tease children, which for many a youngin he could make them believe he was terrifying...but my mother always knew him to be a softie underneath all of the bravado. He served in the Navy in WWI and I believe was a member of the VFW local chapter in Adair.
