Read More	Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, October 25, 1927 CHARLES REDIES PASSED AWAY SUNDAY NIGHT One of County's Oldest Pioneers - Came Here 42 Years Ago Funeral Services Wednesday; Had Suffered Months From Cancer Another of Phillips County's pioneers passed away Sunday night when Charles Redies answered the final roll call. Mr. Redies was one of the early settlers in and around Holyoke having come here about 42 years ago. He passed away at 10:40 o'clock Sunday night after having suffered from cancer of the stomach for about ten months. Born in Germany, Mr. Redies came to America at the age of fourteen and first settled at Crete, Nebraska, but soon moved on to Phillips County. He died at the age of nearly sixty-one years. He is survived by his wife and five children, all of whom are grown to manhood and womanhood. One child preceded him in death. All the family were with him in his final hours. One daughter, Mrs. Ray Johnston of Sherman, California, together with her husband arrived Thursday evening. Henry Redies, a son, together with his wife arrived from Chappell, Nebraska Sunday evening. The other children are at home. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in Holyoke Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock. Mr. Redies was one of the prominent and especially well respected men of the community. His death will be heralded with sadness by all who had been fortunate enough to know him. OBITUARY Charles Agust Redies one of the pioneers of Phillips County and Northeastern Colorado passed away at the family home one half mile east of Holyoke Sunday October 23 at 10:40 p.m. All of the family were at his bedside during the final hours of his earthly life. Though extremely weak and emaciated from his long struggle with a fatal disease his mind was unusually clear and active and he was conscious almost to the last few hours. Those who have been near to him through the last ten months of his life know how bravely and patiently he has faced the days and nights with life and death in the balance and the final separation from the scenes of home and his earthly toil, soon to come. All that the tender care of loved at home and the best of medical skill could do was done in the hope of prolonging his life for the few more allotted years, but though naturally of strong and robust constitution, he was unable to survive. Death came as a blessed release to his great bodily weakness and suffering during the past few weeks and days of his life. Mr. Redies was a native of Germany and was born the 27th day of January 1867. He came from sturdy thrifty people. In 1871 when he was 14 years of age his parents decided to try their fortunes in the New World and came to the United States. They settled at Crete, Nebraska, where he lived with his parents until he grew to manhood. In 1886 or thereabouts he came to Colorado and took up a homestead in Sedgwick County eleven miles southeast of Julesburg. During this time he spent one summer near Greeley and then returned to N.E. Colorado. On March 5, 1894 he was united in marriage with Miss Bertha Fulscher at Julesburg, Colorado. Six children came to share their lives and bless their homes. Three daughters and three sons. The children are: Henry C. Redies of Chappell, Nebraska; Mrs. Helen Heerman of Holyoke; Otto W. Redies of Holyoke; Elsie Pearl who died in infancy March 17, 1908; Mrs. Clara Johnson of Sherman, California; and Walter H. of Holyoke. After their marriage and for a number of years the family home was one mile south of Amherst. During their residence in this neighborhood Mr. Redies built up and improved three different farms and farm homes which speak today of his industry. He took great interest and pride in this kind of work and in this as in his progressive methods of farming and stock raising, he was true to the spirit of the pioneer in a new and growing farming community. About ten years ago the family moved to Holyoke where they lived until about five years ago when they moved to the present home where the last years of his active life were spent. When a boy of 14 he was confirmed in the Lutheran Church and became and was a life long member of that church. He was a firm believer in God and during his long and trying sickness he gave himself anew to God and through Christ found peace and consolation and hope in the assurance of the life beyond the grave, though anxious to live and enjoy for a few more years the presence of his loved ones in the home he was resigned to the will of God, and as the end came near he was anxious to go and be at rest. He leaves to treasure his memory as a loyal husband and father a brother and friend his wife and five children, four sisters and one brother many relatives and friends. He is the first to go since the death of his father and mother. The sisters are Mrs. Berth Hunt of Crete, Nebraska Mrs. Tena Bockels of Crete, Nebraska, Mrs. Hattie Lieb of Longmont, Colorado; Mrs. Tillie Schwan of Dubuque, Iowa; the brother Fred Redies of Colone, South Dakota. To these who mourn the loss of husband, father, brother and friend, our heartfelt sympathy is extended.
