Read More	Another Old Settler and Old Soldier Answers Final Summons Charles Augustus Lyon, son of Lewis and Samantha Lyon, was born in Buffalo, Erie county, New York on Febr. 2, 1842 and passed away at his farm home one and one half miles east of Winnetoon, Nebr. on Febr. 20, 1926 at the age of 84 years and 20 days. When three years of age his parents moved near Avon, Wis., where they resided for seven years and then moved to Elgin, Iowa, where he grew to young manhood. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the 3rd Iowa Infantry and on Sept, 17, 1861 was wounded in the shoulder at Blue Mills, Mo. and was discharged on Febr. 15, 1862 after he had recovered from his injuries. He re-enlisted in June 1862 with his two brothers, William and Albert Lyon in the 184th Iowa Infantry and was again wounded at Springfield, Mo. His final discharge came Aug. 6, 1865 after he had suffered much. On October 1, 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Howard and settled in Bazile Mills, Nebr., where they lived for nine years, then moved to the present home, where they resided until his death. To this union two children were born, Mary and Inez. Those left to mourn are his loving wife and companion, who has enjoyed his companionship for over 58 years; two daughters, Mrs. James Squire, Creighton, Nebr. and Mrs. John Neyens, residing at the old home; 16 grandchildren, one adopted sister at Waterloo, Ia., other relatives and a host of friends. Charles Lyon was a self made man, conscientious, honorable and upright to himself, his family, his country and his friends. He, many times, recalled the hardships and trials of the early Knox county pioneers, who are rapidly passing from among us. Their places will not be easily filled. Their contributions to the country's progress deserves particular attention and their characters, standing out boldly among the most useful the country has produced, should be impressed upon posterity as great, good and patriotic. To them the country's prosperity for all time owes a debt of gratitude, which it can never pay. The sturdy pioneer performed a work, which resounds to his glory, erected for himself a monument in the hearts of the people which will endure long after monuments in marble and statues of heroes have crumbled and perished from the minds of men. His work was dedicated to the uplift of humanity and an appreciation of the prosperity will regard it at the greatest heritage ever bequeathed to the human race. Funeral services were held at the family farm house east of Winnetoon on Tuesday afternoon, February 23, 1925 at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. DeBenham of Spencer and interment made in the Creighton cemetery. The active pallbearers were the six grandsons; Lawrence, Ezra, Charles, Edward Squire, Elmer and Charles Neyens. Those from out of town in attendance at the funeral were Bert Lyon, Madison, Nebr.; Wm. Steok, Enola, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Neyens, Hinton, Ia; Mrs. Norbert Ruhland, Hinton, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schade, Neligh, Nebr. Thus another one of the Civil War "Boys in Blue" has answered the final taps and is at rest. The editor joins friends in extending our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved wife, daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister and all, who mourn in their hours of bereavement. ...The Creighton News 25 Feb 1926
