Lyon Called By Death We are called upon this week to chronicle the death of Mrs. C.A. Lyon, which occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Squire, on Monday evening at 10 o'clock. Death was due to old age and complications, following a several weeks illness. Mrs. Lyon was numbered among the early settlers of the great central west and spent her life as a pioneer of Knox county. Her passing is mourned by a great many friends. Sarah Jane Howard was born near Jimtown, Merceh county, Pa. on Febr. 21, 1842 and passed on to the other world at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 25 days. At the age of 12 she came to Elgin, Iowa, with her parents, John and Mary Howard, where she resided until her marriage to Charles A. Lyon, which took place on October 1, 1867. They moved to Castalia, Iowa and lived there for a year, then, returned to Elgin, residing in that city for four years. Learning to the great opportunities in the west, they came to Knox county and settled on a homestead near Bazile Mills. They resided there for a period of nine years and then sold their farm and bought another tract adjoining the home place. They lived on this farm until the death of Mr. Lyon, which occurred on Febr. 20, 1926. Mr. and Mrs. Lyon were blessed with two children, Mary and Inez, now Mrs. James Squire of Creighton and Mrs. John Neyens of near Winnetoon. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Lyon made her home continuously with her daughters. Besides the two daughters, Mrs. Lyon leaves to mourn two brothers, Thomas and Enos Howard of Elgin, Iowa; one sister, Elizabeth Stansbury of Sioux City, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren and eight great grandsons, whom she held in the highest esteem. During her residence of fifty-seven years in this community, Mrs. Lyon passed through many trying ordeals and endured even more than ordinary tribulation of the hardy pioneer. She was a kindly, genial woman and highly respecte by all. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 o'clock this Thursday afternoon from the Methodist church in charge of Rev. Benj. Kuhler and the remains will be laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery. The News joins with the friends of the bereaved in extending condolences.
