Shortly before midnight Friday, Oct. 29. The nature of his sickness was brights disease, and although he had been in failing health for several years, he worked up to within relatively short time before his death. Charles was 39 years old and was a native of Gilmanton and, his father being the Rev. C. E. Hurd a Baptist clergyman, who now makes his home at Windsor, Vt., with his son of the same name. Charles Austin left Gilmanton Iron Works, the place of his birth, at an early age, but later returned and attended the Gilmanton academy. At the age of 17 he left home and entered the employee of the old Concord & Montreal railroad at Concord. Later he was made assistant cashier for the Boston & Maine at Concord, and afterward went to Lebanon where he was station agent until his health failed compelling him to give up work for a time. His next place of employment was with the Page Belting Co., at Concord. He occupied this position until he removed to Claremont six years ago. Since residing here he has worked as clerk for B. M. Jewett in his grocery store. His wife was Carrie A. Davis whom he married at Concord , 21 years ago. She survives, with six children, five daughters and one son. Besides the one mentioned there is another brother Frank D. Hurd of Concord. The funeral was largely attended at the First Baptist Church Monday afternoon, Rev. Robert B. Pattison officiating. Mr. Pattison paid a feeling tribute to the deceased, whose early death had deprived the community of a good citizen and a dependent family of a husband and father who never wavered in his duty and whose constant, cheerful and loving care will be missed. Mr. Hurd had been a faithful church worker, and the bearers were four young men from his Bible class, Harry Wiley, Murray Schnyer, Percy Spalding, Clarence Chase, Colon Scott, Edward Seems. During the service two solos were beautifully rendered by Mrs. Ayls Putnam Prescott. As a mark of respect, the B. M. Jewett store was closed during the afternoon. There were present at the funeral, Reverend. C. E. Hurd, father of the deceased, and the two surviving brothers, Clarence E. and Frank D. Other relatives and intimate friends were Mrs. Charles Corrigan of Everett , Mass.; Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Dolloff and Mr. George Mitchell of Concord. Tuesday morning the body was taken for interment to Gilmanton Iron Works, accompanied by the brothers, the widow and oldest daughter Mildred.
