Charles C. Tyler, one of Crisfield’s most highly respected residents, died at his home in the Lawsonia neighborhood last Tuesday afternoon, after an illness of nearly a year’s duration. He had been gradually sinking for several days, and the end came peacefully on Tuesday, with the members of his family at his bedside. Capt. Tyler was 64 years of age, and a son of the late Thomas Tyler, one of the early settlers in this community. He spent his entire life here, working at water vocations for many years. Eighteen years ago he entered the U.S. Light House Service and was one of the most widely-known Light House Keepers on Chesapeake Bay, having served at Watts Island Station, Somers Cove, Thimble Shoal and other stations in this section of the Bay, and at the time on his death was, and had been for several years, keeper of Great Shoal Light House, off Dames Quarter, in Tangier Sound. Early last August Capt. Tyler underwent an operation for appendicitis at the McCready Memorial Hospital. His condition failed to improve however, and two other operations were later performed but without avail. After spending more than eight months as a patient in the local institution, Mr. Tyler was removed to his home, where despite the manly fight he made to regain his health, his condition continued to grow worse until the end. Mr. Tyler was a man of many admirable qualities, and rightfully enjoyed the respect and high esteem of the entire community. He was a Christian gentleman who lived his Christianity in his daily life. In his early manhood he gave his heart to Christ, and since that time had been a consistent member of Asbury M. E. Church, and a loyal, enthusiastic worker for the good of the church, the cause of religion and the welfare of his community. A man of very congenial disposition, Mr. Tyler counted every man as his friend; and his high character, his scrupulous honesty and unquestioned integrity; his friendly word and his lovable disposition endeared him to all who knew him. Hid pastor in his funeral sermon Thursday afternoon, characterized him as a Christian and a good man—a devoted husband and father, a good neighbor, a valuable citizen whose passing had created a void in the community, which it would be indeed hard to fill. Throughout his long illness, covering a period of practically a year, his faith never wavered. He endured his suffering with Christian fortitude, placing his cause in the keeping of the Great Redeemer and ready to answer the divine call when it came. Capt. Tyler is survived by a widow, Mrs. Addie E. Tyler; four daughters, Mrs. Christopher Tyler, Mrs. Grace T. Cullen, Mrs. H. Louis Hall of Crisfield, and Mrs. Benj. H. Sterling of Princess Anne; three sons, Fred T. Tyler and Washington W. Tyler of Crisfield; and Walter C. Tyler of Pittsburgh, Pa. One brother, Capt. Thomas Tyler of Chester, Pa., also survives. Funeral services were held from Asbury M. E. church on Thursday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Dr. W. F. Corkran, who spoke most feelingly of the deceased whom he had known for many years, and whom he believed had gone to a “Better Country.” Asbury Council, Jr. O. U. A. M., of which Capt. Tyler was a member, attended the services in a body and officiated with a beautiful ceremony, at the grave. The remains were laid to rest in the Asbury Church cemetery, 'neath a wilderness of flowers, the floral contributions for friends and acquaintances being one of the largest and most elaborate ever seen at a funeral in Crisfield.
