Death came to Mr. Wood after a lingering illness of more than five years. He had been hospitalized in Omaha and Norfolk most of the past year after being severely injured in an automobile accident in Stanton on May 25, 1953. Litigation on the case is pending in district court. His hospitalization during the past year had included brain surgery to relieve pressure believed to have resulted from the accident. He had shown improvement in 1953 and returned home; however he was taken to an Omaha hospital on Jan.5th and transferred to Norfolk in February. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon from the Methodist church with Rev. Donald V. Rose in charge. Pallbearers were Jay Arnold, Bert Fickler Sr., Dr. L. Collins, Roy Whalen, Rink Wright, and Howard Hrabak. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. H.S. Tennant, F.A. Kuester, Leo Hansen, Dr. A.J. Amick, Harold Demaree, and Eli Best. Masonic graveside services were conducted in Stanton cemetery. Born April 12, 1884 at Carson, IA, Calvin was the son of Charles and Harriet Montgomery Wood, pioneer settlers of Pottawottamie County. He was united in marriage with Mary Petersen at Avoca, IA on Feb. 18, 1904. In 1906 they moved to Pilger and in 1908 settled on a farm north of Stanton. In 1910 the woods returned to Dunlap, IA, where they lived two years. Cal Wood was a big man who could see the humor of a situation and laugh, who once he decided he liked you was a solid friend and who could be, if occasion demanded, incredibly forceful. We liked him a great deal because he laughed with us, acted as though we held his friendship and yet on one occasion was mighty forceful. We'll never quite forget Cal that "forceful" day. He was a thousand percent right and we were equally wrong. He handled the matter the only way it could have been brought home to us. For that we had nothing but respect and admiration. It happened when the city council delegated to Cal the unhappy job of stopping center-of-street parking. Whether he was for or against it, we don't know. But we do know that on the day we forgot about it and parked our buggy in the street while we hurried to the post office, Cal was waiting for our return There was no smile. No hesitation. No bashfulness, as many of us exhibit when we scold a friend. He remembered only the law and the fact we had violated it. He told us so briefly, definitely, and in such a way that we never forgot. He did stop parking violations, just as he upheld the law in many other ways. Because he did, he made some people angry. They, too, eventually came to respect him for what he was doing. It's tough to know Cal is gone. But because he was such a big, strong guy we know he wouldn't want someone to write a sob story about him. He just finished living and died. And we'll long remember him.
