Description	:	Charles Atmore was born in the parish of Old Buckingham county of Norfolk, England, March 26, 1828. He was the son of Matthew Atmore, a wealthy land owner of that county. Wilby Hall, the beautiful and stately ancestral home of generations of Atmores, is still standing after 800 years. Read More	Charles Atmore was born in the parish of Old Buckingham county of Norfolk, England, March 26, 1828. He was the son of Matthew Atmore, a wealthy land owner of that county. Wilby Hall, the beautiful and stately ancestral home of generations of Atmores, is still standing after 800 years. He was educated first by a governess in the home, and later at a private school in Lodden, and then sent to a boarding school at Norwich. He came with his parents to America in 1844, and settled in Calhoun county, Michigan on a farm near Battle Creek. When the gold craze broke out in California he went overland to the coast, remaining there nearly two years, returning by boat in 1854. In a short time he again crossed the plains to California, staying two years, and returning as before by at its best was very rough, Mr. Atmore endured many hardships, and had many thrilling adventures, among which were several encounters with the Indians. Afterward he loved to narrate these experiences, and could talk entertainingly for hours on this subject. His talks and descriptions were a fine picture and history of the times before the railroad brought civilization to the west. Immediately on reaching Michigan in 1856 he married Miss Eliza Knight of Marshall, Michigan. Three children were born to this union, George Atmore of Denver; Mrs. T. A. McCool and Mrs. Fred O. Pearce, both of Brighton. In 1888 Mr. Atmore moved to Brighton, buying a ranch three miles north of the town. His wife died in 1906. Charles Atmore passed peacefully away, Sept 15, 1918. He was almost 90 years and 6 months of age. His funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T.A. McCool and conducted by Rev. Bancroft. Mrs. Elsie Bender rendered very beautifully two solos, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and "Abide with Me." Mr Atmore was laid to rest in Fairmount cemetery by the side of his beloved wife of his youth. With the passing of Uncle Charlie Atmore, Brighton loses one of her most honored pioneers. Those that were children eight or ten years ago, all knew and loved Mr. Atmore. At that time there was not a child in the town, but that he knew and could call by name. These children have since grown to womanhood and manhood and are taking their places in the affairs of the world; but this fact remains, not one of these girls or boys that used to go on camping and fishing trips with dear old Uncle Charlie, will ever forget him, or the lessons taught by his gentle unselfish life. In Leigh Hunt's famous poem, Ben Adhem, says to the angel, writing in the book of gold; "I pray thee, then, write me as one that loves his fellow men." The same could be said of Charles Atmore, he loved his fellow men, and when he could think of nothing good to say, he spoke no ill of anyone. He heard no evil, saw no evil and spoke no evil.
