He never married, and died at age 58, "while working on the section." *************** Obit from the Oelwein Daily Register, Thursday May 29, 1941: Charles Christen Ripke, son of the late John and Marie Ripke, was born at Buffalo Grove, Iowa, Dec. 18, 1882, and passed away May 21, 1941, while working on the section, where he had been employed for over 20 years. He leaves to mourn his death his half-brother Will Ripke, one nephew and two nieces, all of St. Paul, Minn. His parents, a brother Ed, and a sister Hazel, preceded him in death. Charley had a kind disposition and was friends to all. The entire community was shocked by his sudden death and sympathy is extended the bereaved ones. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Mrs. F. T. Scharff and Mrs. Johnson sang "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" and "Rock of Ages". Interment was in Madison cemetery. Pallbearers were Ivan Hesner, Herman Graves, W. H. Moeller, Ralph Graves, Ben Eschen and R.R. Allen. * * * Charles Ripke, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ripke, was born in Aurora, December 18, 1882, and spent nearly all his life here. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed and made a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran church here when a young lad. He was employed by the Chicago Great Western R. R. Company for many years and at one time was section foreman. He was at work putting in new railroad ties near Lamont, May 24th, when he was stricken with a heart ailment which resulted in death a few moments later. His parents, a brother Ed, and a sister Mrs. Hazel McCarthy, preceded him. He is survived by a half brother, Will Ripke, of St. Paul, Minn.; several nieces and a nephew. Funeral services were held from the Lutheran church Monday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Paul Ehlers. Mrs. Charles Johnson and Mrs. Fred Scharff sang accompanied by Chris Haushen. Paul bearers were Ivan Hesner, Herman and Ralph Graves, Bob Allen, Will Moeller, and Ben Eschen. Burial was in Madison cemetery. Sympathy is extended to the brother.
