Description	:	Hazel Ripke was raised in Aurora, IA. She married John Henry McCarthy on 28 June 1919 in Dubuque, IA. They first lived in Chicago after marriage, then went in 1921 to live with Hazel's Ripke relatives in Bigfork, MT. Ripke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ripke, was born at Aurora, Iowa, March 26, 1893. She resided with her parents at the place of her birth until her marriage at Dubuque, June 28, 1919, to Harry McCarthy of Chicago. After their marriage they removed to Chicago where they resided for two years after which they moved to Big Fork and Butte, Montana, and thence to Seattle, Wash. where she became ill sometime after their arrival. Her illness extended over a period of several weeks, ending with her death at the home of her parents at Aurora, where she and her husband had come on October 7th, in hopes that surrounded by her family and friends, the change would prove beneficial. All that kind hearts could do, was done to mitigate her sufferings, but she gradually failed until the evening of Nov. 11th, when she passed away. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, her mother and father, three brothers, Will of Oxford, Wisconsin: Charles and Edward of Aurora, and many other relatives and a host of friends. Hazel was endowed with a faculty of making friends and keeping them and during her illness at home those friendships were a comforting source from which she derived the courage to face her illness with uncomplaining patience. Ever thoughtful of those near and dear to her, she endured her suffering with remarkable fortitude and by reason of this the end came as a shock to the family. She was the first babe to be christened in the Lutheran church of this place and the funeral was held from this church. Burial was made in the new addition at Madison cemetery. Those who attended the funeral from away were: Mrs. W.W. Todd and Mr. & Mrs. Carl Ehrke of Waterloo, Mrs. Catherine McCarthy, Mrs. Thomas McCarthy and Mrs. N.W. Kendall of Chicago, Mrs. Nellie Wimmer, Mrs. I.J. Baldwin, Mrs. Fern King, Mrs. Blanche Rice, Mr. & Mrs. Fred Nehring and Mr. & Mrs. Fish, all of Oelwein, Dr. B.G. Bissell and daughter, Mrs. Harold (Irene) Gladwin of Dubuque, (Obit in the Constitution, November 26, 1924)
