"The family and friends were saddened on Thursday morning to learn of the passing of Con Fisher, one of the earliest of Custer County homesteaders and a resident of this community for more than 57 years. Despite his advanced years, the deceased had enjoyed the best of health until he became seriously ill a few weeks ago. Complications incident to the infirmities of age soon developed and he died at the age of ninety, being at the time of his demise the oldest citizen of Algernon township. Charles Conway Fisher, son of Isaac and Sarah Fisher, was born in Galia County, Ohio on April 22nd, 1850 and departed this life on December 5th, 1940, having attained the age of 90 years, 7 months and 13 days. He received his education in the rural schools of his native state, later moving to West Virginia with his parents. Leaving there in 1883, he came directly to Custer County where he entered homestead rights on a quarter section of land three miles north of the present site of Mason City. In 1881, Mr. Fisher was united in marriage to Miss Laura J. Amsberry, a daughter of Francis Amsberry, who was also a pioneer Custer County homesteader. The young couple began their married life in a sod house built by the husband upon his arrival in Nebraska. Two sons and two daughters were born of their marriage, all of whom are living. Con Fisher will always be remembered as an honest, loyal, kind-hearted man and he had the confidence and genuine regard of a large circle of neighbors and friends in the community in which most of his mature years were spent. He was a great lover of the outdoors and in his declining years received much enjoyment in fishing. For years he was affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd fellows and the Modern Woodmen of America. Besides his wife, the deceased leaves to mourn his passing two daughters, Mrs. Della Smith of Seattle, Washington and Mrs. Dora A. Keller of Riverton, Wyoming; two sons, Chester of Costa Mesa, California and Lee C. of Broken Bow; two sisters, Mrs. Susan Yeick and Mrs. Sally Coffman of Huntington, West Virginia; twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, numerous other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held from the Baptist Church in Mason City at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon with Pastor Alice Elison of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the family plot in the Mason City Cemetery."
