Description	:	Charles Cowan Self was the 2nd of Leonard and Ellen Self's thirteen children. In the winter of 1906 he moved to MO from Russell Co, Va, with his parents and some of his siblings. Whether he had tuberculosis at the time of his move is unknown, but by the following February he wasn't expected to live. He died on April 9th. Funeral services were held at Freedom Wednesday evening and the remains were laid to rest in that old church yard. Source: Versailles Leader April 12, 1907(page 8) COWAN SELF DEAD Cowan Self died at the home of his parents, 2 miles east of Glensted, last Tuesday after a lingering illness from consumption, aged 22 years. Deceased was born in Virginia and came to this county a few months ago, locating on the Rev. David Bowman farm which his parents bought. He was an exemplary young man generally beloved by all who knew him and a member of the Baptist church. His remains were interred at Freedom cemetery Wednesday. The Leader extends sympathy to the bereaved family in their great loss. Source: Versailles Leader April 18, 1907 (page 3) AT REST C.C. Self was born May 13, 1877 in Russell Co, Va., died April 9, 1907, age 29 yrs. 11 mon 26 days. The deceased was a son of Leonard B. and Margeret Ellen Self who live on the farm formerly owned by Rev. David Bowman. Brother Self was converted and joined the Springfield Baptist church, Castlewood Va., before he was of age. He was buried Sunday April 11 in the Freedom cemetery. The funeral services were held by the writer assisted by Rev. David Bowman, after which the I.O.O.F. took charge he being a member of that fraternity, and buried him with the ritualistic ceremonies of the order. May we all meet again beyond the tomb in a land where there are no funerals or cemeterys. Let us all relatives and friends, look to Him who said: "I am the resurrection and life." for consolation and help in our sadness. R.L. Brother Self was a son of Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Self. He was born in Russell county, Va., May 12, 1877. He was converted and joined the Springfield Baptist church before he reached the age of 21 years. He was a comparative stranger to us, yet we are glad to know he was not a stranger to the Savior of Mankind. The funeral services were conducted at Freedom Church by the writer, assisted by Rev. David Bowman, April 11th, after which the Old Fellows brotherhood, of which he was a member took charge and with beautiful songs and appropriate ceremonies of the order all that was earthly of C.C.
