He passed away Thursday, February 1, 1934 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Hoverson in Mount Vernon, Washington. He suffered an accident on December 1, 1933, when he fell into a pit at a service station and had not been well for a couple of months and on January 29 suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he died. He was 87 years, 4 months and 11 days of age at the time of his demise. Charles D. Pangburn was born in Oswego county, N.Y. September 20, 1846. His mother died when he was four years of age and at the age of eight years, he went to Cook county, Illinois to live with his uncle, where he lived until the Civil War. On September 3, 1862, he enlisted in the 88th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, where he served until June 28, 1865. He returned to Cook County, Illinois. On January 18, 1869 he was married to Caroline Crandall. To this union three children, two sons and one daughter, were born and who survive him. They are: Albert L. Pangburn of Ekalaka, Mont., Ilah P. Hoverson, Mount Vernon, Wash. and Wilbert L. Pangburn, Dante, South Dakota. The union was broken by the death of his wife on December 15, 1918. In 1882 Mr. Pangburn took a homestead five miles northwest of Creighton, where he lived with his family for seven years. In 1889 he rented the farm and moved with his family to Creighton, where he had an implement store for four years. Upon selling his implement business, he started in the harness business, retiring in 1896. He served on the city council for three terms. On October 24, 1922 at Missoula, Mont., he was married to Mrs. Edith M. Buck of Strathmore, California. On account of poor health on Oct. 9. 1925, he and his wife entered the Soldier's home at Grand Island, Nebr., where they resided several years and a little over two years ago on Dec. 9, 1931, they went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Edw. Hoverson at Mount Vernon, Washington. On August 12, 1932, while Mr. and Mrs. Pangburn were at Tacoma, Washington, visiting with her daughter, Mrs. Pangburn passed away. Mr. Pangburn, throughout his many years of residence here created many friendships. He was one of the sturdy pioneers, who endured the usual hardships and vicissitudes of the early day. He was a charter member of the local GAR Post and his passing brings to a close the final chapter of the post of those who fought that the union might be preserved. He served his family, country and fellowmen well. The remains arrived here Tuesday afternoon from Mount Vernon, Washington, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Edward Hoverson. At the depot to meet the body were relatives, the local American Legion Post and the Creighton band. The funeral cortege led by the band and followed by the American Legion marched through Main Street, where flags were flown at half mast to the Methodist church, where impressive funeral services were held, conducted by Rev. R.B.E. Hill, pastor of the church. Many old friends of the deceased were present to pay their last respects. Interment was made in the Greenwood cemetery, where the Legion firing squad fired three volleys over the flag draped casket and taps were sounded.
