He is best remembered for his book "On the Origin of Species," published in 1859, that established all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. While controversial, due to its departure from the religious view of creationism, by the 1870s the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a... Read More |

Sir Darwin,Although you are no longer of this world, you are one of my greatest heroes. You are among the most brilliant men of whom have ever lived, and your theory revolutionized the biological sciences. One day, your logic will finally prevail and on that day, ou will finally be known in the true majesty you deserve. Read less

"If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." said Isaac Newton, near whom Charles Darwin is buried- and for biologists, one of the tallest giants is Darwin himself. Theodosius Dobzhansky, the famous geneticist and zoologist, affirmed that "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution." The recognition of Darwin's greatness is not limited to academics however- the major concepts he introduced into the mainstream are easily understandable by anyone:evolution- descent with modificationcommon ancestry- the evolution of two or more populations from a previous one (of which the most stunning example is all life on earth descending from a common source)population diversity and inheritance- every individual organism is unique and in many cases, individual qualities may be passed down from parent to offspring;selection- which organisms in a population give rise to the next, thus leading to evolution: artificial selection- a conscious choice of which organisms live and which die in a managed population (i.e. farm plants and animals) based on their characteristics; natural selection- survival of the fittest organisms in a harsh, unforgiving world; sexual selection- the choice of mates based on their perceived strengths and weaknesses;co-evolution- the mutual adaptation of two or more species to the benefit of both;and so forth. There is however a large group of people who reject Darwin's ideas not from lack of merit, but from fundamentalist religious dogma; they denounced Darwin in his day and still do so (as is sadly evidenced by the first note left here) just as Copernicus and Galileo were denounced (and STILL are in some circles) for heliocentrism. But for those of us who view the world with open eyes and an open mind, their theology is an intellectually bankrupt hold-over from a pre-scientific era; they will never fully understand man's place in the universe and we must resist their attempts to dictate policy or indoctrinate our youth with arguments that appeal to emotion over reason. And with that warning (not to let ourselves be pushed off our giant's shoulders) firmly in place, let us allow Darwin to speak again, his words still as alive as they were nearly a century and a half ago when they were first published in the "Origin of Species" as a conclusion to this remembrance:"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved." the impact you made on the world cannot be denied. I KNOW you were right; natural selection is the only explaination for why some species live and others die out. Thanks so very much for your contribution to society and the world as a whole.

My Dear Darwin,A true genius; Thank you for daring to see the universal order as it is, and not as how some wish is it was. For overcoming a static, stale mythology of the human mind to bring us a legacy from time ancient beyond man, we thank you. Your memory is eternal in our minds and, dare I say it, souls. Rest in Peace dear Charles. Read less

So, life is a process and not a fixed thing. What's the fuss? All life and non-life are joined and in constant motion. Without motion and change, there is no life. After more than a century, your detractors have never diminished your accomplishments. With all due respect, it's better that the fundamentalists throw worms on your tomb than crash jetliners into skyscrapers. Read less
