Read More	JOHNSTON, CHARLES DAVID—Particulars of the sad accident by which Conductor Charles D. Johnston of the Elkhorn lost his life are given in detail in two other articles in this paper. The Elkhorn railroad furnished a special car to bring the remains here and they were accompanied by the wife and two children of the deceased, members of Mrs. Johnston’s family, a committee of conductors and Rev. A.R. Julian. On the arrival of the remains here Saturday night, they were taken to the Jameson Hotel. At 9:30 Sunday morning funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church by the pastor, Rev. O. W. Fifer. A brief address was also made by Rev. A. R. Julian of Chadron, a warm friend of the dead man. The male quartette furnished music. The interment was in the Geneva cemetery. A very large number of people attended the service and interment. Mr. Johnston was reared in Brooklyn, N. Y., and was educated as a civil engineer. In 1885 he came west to grow up with the country. Arriving here in the fall, he went to work for M. Pangle, residing with Mr. Pangle during the winter. The next spring, he joined the engineering party of Chief Engineer Nutt of the Burlington and assisted in making the surveys for the Burlington’s branch lines in this county, and later he was engaged in similar work for the Burlington at other points. Then the Burlington put him in charge of a train and he continued in the train service of some road until the time of his death. After working for the Burlington for a while, he accepted an offer to go to the state of Washington. He did not like it there and he returned to Nebraska and entered the service of the Elkhorn road, or more properly speaking, the Northwestern system. He has been with this road continuously for the past eight years. Mr. Johnston was married February 23, 1890, to Miss Sue Pangle, daughter of M. Pangle, who, with two daughters aged four and two years, survives him. Mr. Johnston had many acquaintances here who were deeply pained to learn of his death. He was just in the prime of life, being but thirty-two years old. The only insurance he carried was a policy for $2,000 in the Order of Railway Conductors. Mr. Johnston was very highly esteemed by all who knew him. He is credited by Chadron people with having been a public spirited, enterprising citizen of upright character and with being a man of considerable influence in the community in which he lived. The funeral party that came from Chadron consisted of Mrs. Johnston and her two children; Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Barclay, the latter a sister of Mrs. Johnston; Mord and Bliss Pangle, brothers of Mrs. Johnston who reside at Chadron; and the following members of the Order of Railway Conductors, some of whom were accompanied by their wives: Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Wyman, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Bowering, N. E. Pender, Taylor Steen, A. N. Thorndike, Mr. Jacobs and Brakeman, John Lind. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Thompson of Trenton, Neb., were also present at the funeral. Mrs. Thompson is a sister of Mrs. Johnston. The Nebraska Signal August 5th, 1898 page 4.
