CUTTING IS TAKEN BY DEATH Well_Known Orchardist of Campbell Passes Away at Age of 91 Years Special to the Mercury Herald Campbell April 10 – Charles Douglas Cutting, retired orchardist, died here this morning at the age of 91 years and 9 months. He had lived in California since 1893. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon from the Melvin parlors in Los Gatos. Brought up on a New England farm, he spent the greater part of his long and eventful life upon the soil. He was born July 10, 1834, at Haverhill, New Hampshire, the youngest of the nine children of Abijah and Pamelia Cutting. At Haverhill he attended school during the short winter terms and helped his father on the farm during the remainded of the year. At 16 he had an education as complete as his native could furnish. RENTED FARM He greatly desired to go to college, and his desire was intensified by the fact that his boy chumbegan at this time to study for Dartmouth. But the family means, sadly depleted by fitting out three older sisters, were insufficient, and so he went to work on the farm with his father. At the end of the year, however, with an independence of spirit that marked his whole life, he persuaded his father to permit him to become his own manager. Under this arrangement, at the age of 17, he rented a farm in his own name and took his father and mother to live with him. After renting various farms in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts, he finally turned, at the age of 20, to the "west," taking his father and mother with him. For the first two years he rented an Iowa farm in company with an older brother, Abijah, who had finally returned to the soil after the divers exciting experiences of a whaling voyage. By this time another brother, James, the inventor of the ambrotype process of photography, had located desirable farming land still further west; and Charles, his brother, Abijah, and his father, all preempted quarter sections of land at Riceville, Iowa. IOWA HOMESTEAD A payment of $2 per acre for the government land was necessary, and this required more money than the young man could command. He managed, however, to secure a loan at 40 per cent interest. The father's claim was 160 acres of timber land, and enough of this was finally sold to pay off the debt. The remainder of the timber furnished wood and employment for many winters. Every winter herds of elk came down from the north, and all sorts of wild animals abounded. During these years his father and mother lived with him, and his father worked with him on the farm. The main lesson that the father gave his son was that of hard work. In 1863 Charles married Mary St John, and in 1865 a son, William, was born. Four years later his wife died. In early manhood he joined the Congregational church at Riceville and was soon made deacon. This position he retained during his stay in Iowa, and upon his departure was made honorary deacon for life. He was always an active church worker, for many years Sunday school superintendant, and he often supplied in the pulpit when the church temporarily lacked a pastor. At one time for a period of two years he regularly read the sermons of Spurgeon to the Sunday morning congregation, and took his turn in conducting the joint evening meetings of the three churches of the town. So well did he like this work that had he been a younger man he could have studied for the ministry. In 1870 he married Anna Bourne, a young school teacher. He was always a progressive farmer and among the first in the neighborhood to introduce improved farm machinery. He was glad to drop scythe for the hand binder and that for the self-binding harvester. His farm was equipped with grain mills, improved rakes and hay loaders and other machinery that represented the best available at the time. He exercised a judgment about crop selection and rotation that gave him a wide reputation for sagacity. He was a successful stock raiser with an understanding of animals and a consideration that kept them well housed and fed. Through careful purchase and selection he developed fine breeds of horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs. Industry, integrity, and ability had by this time won him the confidence of his section of the state, and he was elected in 1889 to the Iowa state legislature on the Republican ticket. He enjoyed his legislative work at Des Moines and succeeded in placing important and progressive legislation upon the statute books. EXPLORATION TRIP At about this time he joined the exploration party of Gleason to the headwaters of the Mississippi river to definitely determine its source, and in 1892 made a visit to the Pacific coast. Among the many who enjoyed the hospitality of the roomy Cutting house and broad acres, was the eldest brother, Chester, whom he persuaded to return with him from the gold fields of California. His brother passed the remainder of his life in the home and finally died at the age of 92. Forty strenuous years had been passed in the rigorous Iowa climate, and Charles Cutting was in a financial position to ease up from hard work. The year after his return from California was unusually severe. He went for a visit to his wife's mother and was snowed in for two weeks unable to return. He made up his mind there and then to depart for California and in the spring of 1893, at nearly 60 years of age, he once more started "west." CAMPBELL ORCHARDIST For ten years he engaged in active orchard work near Campbell, and then left the ranch to the care of his older sons and followed the two youngest to Stanford. For six years he occupied himself with gardening in the university town, and then with his wife retired to Pacific Grove for several years. Since 1926 he and his wife lived comfortably and peacefully at Campbell, surrounded by their sons and families. Their 50th wedding anniversary was held January 21, 1920, and at least 70 relatives and friends helped them celebrate. A celebration was also held for his 90th birthday, and at that time he was well and vigorous, making his daily walk after the mail and groceries. The merits of a life covering nearly a century of productive activity cannot be summarized in a word, but the key traits of C. D. Cutting's character stand but clearly and unmistakably. His industry, frugality, and good judgment were large factors in his success. His strong sense of justice and open-mindedness led him to treat each of his children, and of his fellowmen, with fairness and honesty. MAN OF JUDGMENT Reliance was placed on his judgment, and his advice was constantly cought. He took part in no quarrels, except as arbiter. He gave generously to the church and to those in need. He was blessed with almost uninterrupted health, and labored with cheerfulness and optimism. His accomplishments were limited by lack of educational opportunities and by too early responsibilities. One of the aims of his life which he realized was that of giving chance for higher schooling, the need of which he had felt keenly so many times. C. D. Cutting is survived by his widow, Anna Bourne Cutting; five sons, William, Frank, Carl, Theodore and James; eight grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. All the members of the family were at his bedside during his final brief illness, caused by the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. Old age always brings discomforts and aches, but to him it brought more of ripened reminiscence than pain, and his last months were full of the quiet and peace so well merited by nearly a century of virtuous living and untiring service.
