Campbell, May 21 – Mrs. Mercy Anna Bourne Cutting, for many uears an active worker in W.C.T.U. circles and the Congregational church, died this afternoon, following an illness of seven months. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock from the Congregational church of Campbell, and will be conducted by the Rev. J.H. Bennett, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Benjamin St John, pastor of the Congregational church at Woodside, near Redwood City. FROM PURITAN STOCK Mrs. Cutting was the widow of the late Charles D. Cutting. She was born in East Falmouth, on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, August 12, 1846. She was of Puritan stock, dating back to the colonial days of the 17th century, when Richard Bourne came to America as a missionary to the Marshpee Indians. At his own expense this ancestor purchased the ground occupied by the tribe, and for many successive generations the Bournes had charge of the settlement. The Indians were still living on Cape Cod in Anna Cutting's childhood. Her parents moved to Winneshiek county, Iowa, in 1856, when that state was thrown open for pioneer settlement. After education at Cresco she taught school for a time, and then married C.D. Cutting of Riceville, Iowa, in 1870. The family, consisting of father, mother and five sons, moved on westward to California in 1893. An orchard was purchased on Hamilton avenue, and later when the two youngest sons were at Stanford, a home was established in Palo Alto. A few years were also spent in Pacific Grove. HAD FIVE SONS For the past ten years she had lived on Harrison avenue, Campbell, with her husband, C.D. Cutting, until his death, April 10, 1926, and since that time with her son, F.H. Cutting, and family. Toward the close of 1929 she was stricken with one of the common infirmities of age, and began gradually to fail. There are five sons: William C. Cutting, orchardist; Francis H. Cutting, landscape artist; Charles B. Cutting, orchardist; Theodore A. Cutting of the Campbell union high school faculty and James A. Cutting, M.D., of the Agnew state hospital medical staff.
