A Legendary Characterization The Charles E Haines Story It was not always prudent to refer to a person as being a ‘character;' one should perhaps describe them as ‘distinctive individuals.' However, a colloquial use of the term permits applications to a person of a reputation differing from other folks. Frustrated and burdened with grief at the death of a young woman of Rumney who he had intended to marry, he refused to speak from that time on and affected white clothing, including a linen duster — both summer and winter — for the rest of his days. In the twentieth century, legends and factual memories remain in Rumney concerning the Haines family. Charles E Haines, whose mother was one of the six sisters of Nathan Clifford, born in Rumney and an eminent jurist, who served twenty-six years as Associate Justice of the Unites States Supreme Court. Recollections of Charles cluster around his many eccentricities which might possibly warrant the informational use of the word ‘character.' There are several conflicting stories in Rumney about the cause of one of his noted aberrations. Credence may be given to the report that he was disappointed in a love affair; whether he was actually jilted or the marriage otherwise could not take place is not too clear. However, it seems that one wintry night he drove up half a dozen miles to Rumney to court his intended bride, only to be repulsed. His frustration wasn't helped any by the indignity of being dumped out into a snowdrift on the way home when the sleigh overturned. It then appears that he secluded himself and took to his bed which he did not leave for long years, some people say as much as twenty. How this state of affairs was changed is not clear, but some stories have it that he was forcibly removed there-from by a group of men who thought he ought to help himself and no longer be a burden to his dutiful mother. Anyway, he was induced to return to society but only after he gained the concession — based upon some religious conviction — that one must wear white linen clothing to gain the approbation of the Diety. There are 102 references in the bible referring to the wearing of linen and he apparently gained these convictions from one or many of these writings. Charles' mother obliged, and made him a suit of white linen, and this was the sort of attire he affected the rest of his life until he passed away in Rumney over fifty years ago. He never shaved nor had his hair cut; it was worn in a pigtail down his back. He was quite loquacious; undoubtedly he had spent the years in bed voraciously reading books. He became a book salesman of sorts in the Baker River Valley but all efforts to conclude a sale had to be prefaced by extended discussions in almost any subject under the sun. He had an interesting policy which present-day salesmen of any kind cannot pursue; if any prospective purchaser disagreed with him at any point, the meeting was at an end. He packed up and got out of his house. His own integrity of opinion was more important to Charles E Haines than making a sale. Judge Clifford's mother was living with her daughter — mother of Haines — late in life before she moved to Portland to be with her distinguished son. When the honorable justice would make annual trips to West Rumney to visit with his mother, he got off the train there and took quarters in the hotel, sending a carriage down to Rumney to bring her up to see him. Apparently the judicial mind, trained in the use of logic, wanted nothing to do with Charles Haines' brand of reasoning. Mr Haines had some strange ideas about revising the use of spelling in the English language. It was not a phonetic approach and at this late date, one has difficulty in deciding his system. When his father, Henry H Haines died on April 24, 1886, the son caused a substantial gravestone to be erected over his grave in front of the Sand Hill cemetery (actually the Smart cemetery) on Buffalo Road to show there laid Henry G HEIGNEZ. When his mother died on January 6, 1890, the stone clearly indicated that she was Nancy HEIGNEZ. There are three other unmarked graves in the family lot. Charles E Haines is buried in one of them, but at his passing there was no one to erect a marker indicating just how the name was to be spelled. Anyway, the memory of Charles E Haines in Rumney remains as a tradition, legend or interesting commentary on the rugged individualism that marked early pioneer families. >Courtesy of The Plymouth Historical Society Museum Collection.
