Father J. Cohane officiating at the Requiem Mass. The pallbearers were Fred Zutz, Delbert Drey, John Mullen, Wm. Cerny, Herman Lubbers and Ben Turgeon. Charles Klufa was born March 24, 1864 at Chicago, IL. When he was a small child the family moved to Cedar Rapids, IA. In 1875 he moved with his parents to Dakota Territory, near what is now Tabor, SD. When a young man he went to Washington State where he worked in the lumber camps for several years. He later returned to Nebraska where he homesteaded near Chadron. After he proved up on his claim he returned to Tyndall, SD where he farmed for a few years. He was united in marriage to Miss Tracy Plavec on July 30, 1894 at Tabor, SD After his marriage he went into business at Tyndall, operating the Deering Implement Shop in partnership with Earl Eades. In the fall of 1904 Mr. Klufa and his family moved to the town site of Burke shortly after it opened where he proved up on the lots where he later built a home. He built and operated the first feed store in Burke which is the building now occupied by Carroll's Produce Station. He also owned the first dairy in Burke. After the railroad came, Mr. Klufa built and operated the first grain elevator in Burke for the Krotter Co. Later he farmed north of Burke for a number of years. In 1920 Mr. Klufa accepted a position as caretaker at the Gregory County Court House in Burke retiring in 1943. He enjoyed good health up until a few months ago and since that time had been hospitalized most of the time. He grew steadily weaker and on April 18 passed away at Mary House in Pierre, SD at the age of 90 years and 25 days. He leaves to mourn his death, one son, James of Burke, and two daughters Marie Derby of Minneapolis and Elsie of Burke; five sisters, one brother, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter and one grandson. Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Lester Derby and Howard Derby of Minneapolis; Mrs. Rose Onstott, Mrs. Emma Johnston, Mrs. Carrie Caskey and Miss Ruth Caskey of Enid, Oklahoma; Joe Klufa of Billings, OK; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Dufek of Hutchinson, KS; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Teply, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Varilek, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Varilek, Mrs. Roy Bowers, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Plavec and son, Mr. and Mrs. James Plavec, Charles Flamming, Mrs. B. Flamming, all of Tyndall, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stastny, Mrs. Cuka of Wagner, SD; Mrs. Melvin Steward, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kortan of Fairfax; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Smizer of Herrick and Paul Klufa of Brookings, SD. Burial was made in the Sacred Heart Cemetery south of Burke.
