Description	:	Charles "Charlie" Kosier, age 93, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Watertown with Reverend Elmer Brinkman officiating. Blair Titze will be the organist. Military honors will be conducted by the local U.S. Navy Reserve Members at the church. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, January 15, 2018 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Active Pallbearers will be Brian Kosier, Josiah Kosier, David Flint, Matthew Krueger, Tim Padgett and Scott Hubbard. Charles Edward Kosier, the eldest son of Arley R. and Margaret L. (Wing) Kosier, was born September 26, 1924 in Cherokee, Iowa. As a young boy, he worked at Hunters Grocery on West Kemp and Everetts Grocery on Second Avenue. He was a hard worker all of his life. Chuck attended Watertown High School and competed in basketball and football. Before he could graduate, he enlisted in the United States Navy on June 18, 1943. He served as a pharmacist mate during World War II and was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater where he participated in the Okinawa Gunto operation on the USS LSM 418. He was honorably discharged on April 16, 1946. Later, he was awarded an Honorary High School Diploma from Watertown High School. Chuck married Doris Arlene Lindgren on August 23, 1947 in Watertown. To this loving union, five children were born. Charlie and Doris had 60 wonderful years together. He worked at Herbergers shoe department, then Everetts Grocery as a butcher before being hired by Brevik Wholesale. He sold Old Dutch Chips products, candy, gum and peanuts and became known as the Candy Man. In 1976, Chuck and Doris bought the business and established Charlies Candy and Chips. He was not only known as Charlie the Candyman but as a jokester and a story-teller. He took advantage of holidays (especially Halloween) and other occasions to pull pranks and tell jokes and stories to his customers, friends and family over the years. His dog Spring Timex was a favorite along with a special-feature golf putter. Chuck retired in 1987. After retirement, he and Doris looked forward to spending their winters in warmer weather; first in Texas, then California and for eleven winters in Arizona where they made wonderful friendships. Charlie was an avid golfer playing three to six times each week. Charlie and Doris loved to watch high school sports as well as all types of sports on TV. They played card games, dice games and cribbage, one of his favorites. He had retirement cards made so he could hand them out to thousands of people to spread jokes, tongue-twisters and happiness to others. Charlie also made wooden crafts to sell, but mostly to give away. For example chip bag clips, round tuits, toast tweezers, note holders, golfball dogs, puzzles, clever boxes, basketball games, etc. For years he found great joy in going to his daughter Nancys 6th grade classroom to entertain and educate the students with his demonstrations, games and toys. He also gave each student a fifty-cent piece. Charlie was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of Frank H. Adams Post 750 of the VFW, American Legion Codington County Post 17 and American Legion Peden-Cole Post 109 in Gary, South Dakota. He also enjoyed attending Quarterback Club meetings and FUMC Late Risers Prayer Group. Grateful for having shared Charlies life are his children, Tim (Betsy) Kosier, Carson City, NV; Jill (Charles) Jordan, Aurora, CO; Nancy (Mark) Flint, Aberdeen, SD; Jeff (Jolette) Kosier, Watertown, SD; Heidi Namken, Sioux Falls, SD; his brother, Richard (LouAnn) Kosier, Watertown, SD; sisters-in-law, Jo (Bob) Hubbard, Pat Kosier and Patty Kosier; brothers-in-law, Jerry (Elaine) Roesch, Gene Shields and family; family friend Augusta Johnson; his grandchildren, Angela Padgett, Brian Kosier, Alexia Hemmerich, Gregory Namken, David Flint, Brittany Namken, Josiah Kosier, Amanda Krueger; and six great-grandchildren.
