Charles Edward Hayes was born on a farm East of Portsmouth, Iowa, on November 3, 1930, the only son of Charles and Louise (Andersen) Hayes. Due to the death of his parents. When he was only 11 months old, Chuck was raised by his grandparents, Anton and Elizabeth (Boettger) Andersen. He attended country school and graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1948. After high school, Chuck worked at the Cox Elevator in Tennant, Iowa driving trucks until January of 1949 when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Medical Company of the 151 Infantry Regiment until his honorable discharge on January 26, 1950. He then was a member of the United States Army Reserve until being honorably discharged in 1960. On June 7, 1950, he was united in marriage to Bernadine Pauley at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Five children were born to this union: Marcia, Phyllis, Dan, Janelle and Patricia. After their marriage, Chuck and Bernadine continued to live in Shelby County where Chuck was employed for several years as a carpenter for the Grote Construction Company and then was employed by Western Iowa Pork in Harlan until he retired in 1993. Charles developed an entertainment character named "Foster" Hayes based on the television character "Foster" Brooks, a tipsy comedian, His first appearance was at the Portsmouth Centennial in 1982, He then went on to appear at clubs, banquets, class reunions, the Iowa Meat Processors Association and the Martin Family Show. These appearances continued until 2007. Charles "Foster" Hayes died at his home, the house he was born in, on Sunday, October 10, 2010, having attained the age of seventy~nine years, eleven months and eight days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadine, his parents, grandson, Christopher James Allen, and great granddaughter, Ashley Jordon Shropshire.
