HAYES DIED LAST THURSDAY ~ ~ ~ SUCCUMBS FROM BULLET IN~ JURY AFTER 16 DAY FIGHT ~ ~ ~ Only Small Son Remains of Fam~ ily Of Three After Father Shoots Wife, Son and Self ~ ~ ~ Mrs. Louise Hayes, who was shot and seriously wounded on Saturday morning, Oct. 31, died at the Harlan Hospital last Thurs~ day shortly after noon. The small son, Edward, 16 months old, who was also shot at the same time, is at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Andersen in Lincoln town~ ship, and apparently ????? to be recovering. Hayes, after shooting his wife and son, then turned the gun upon himself, and fired one shot. Death was instantaneous. The body of Mrs. Hayes was removed to the French Funeral Home where it remained until Fri~ day, when it was taken to the home of Mrs. Hays' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Andersen, in Lin~ coln township. Funeral services were held at the Andersen home Saturday af~ ternoon at 2:00 o'clock with in~ terment in the union church ceme~ tery. Rev. K. M. Mathiesen, pastor of the Immanuel Lutheran church of this city officiated at the ser~ vices. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Services Last Saturday Mrs. Louise Andersen~Hayes was born in Lincoln township, Iowa on June 4th, 1903, and died at the Harlan Hospital on Nov. 18th, 1931. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Andersen and was bap~ tised in the Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa. On Dec. 23rd, she was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Edward Hayes of Missouri. She leaves to mourn her un~ timely departure her son, her fa~ ther and mother, one sister, Mrs. Anna Kohl, and two brothers, Fred and Will, all of Shelby county. The funeral service was held at the Andersen home, Saturday, Nov. 14th , at 2:00 p.m. In spite of the rain and the muddy roads many friends and neighbors ????? ?????????????????????????? Andersen and Family ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ THE REPUBLICAN HARLAN, IOWA Thursday, Nov. 19, 1931 BULLET FRIED BY CRAZED MAN CLAIMS ANOTHER ~ ~ Mrs. Ed Hayes Died at Harlan Hospital Thursday ~ ~ Shot by her husband, in what is supposed to have been a crazed brooding over domestic troubles, Mrs. Ed Hayes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Andersen of Lin~ coln township succumbed at the Harlan hospital, this afternoon at about 2:15 She is survived by her parents, her son, about one year old, one brother, Fred Andersen, and per~ haps other close relatives. The shooting of herself and her infant son, by the husband and father, on Saturday morning, Oc~ tober 31, promised for a time to be not so serious. Hayes, the husband and father, it will be re~ called, committed suicide when he turned the lethal weapon upon his own temple. The Hayes troubles were of more or less intensity, it appears, ever since their marriage. A tem~ porary separation seemed to have been followed by reconciliation, and Mrs. Hayes returned to her husband. She underwent an operation at the Harlan hospital about two weeks previous to the night when herself and her infant son were attacked by the husband and father, and was recovering from its effects at the home of her parents, five miles west of Harlan, when the fatal accident occurred. We believe that Mrs. Hayes was born in Lincoln township. She has lived there, at any rate, since she was a small girl. Perhaps no other tragedy in the county's history has been responsible for more general regret. Mrs. Hayes' friends in numbers have testified in our hearing concerning her qualifications of friendship and good neighborliness. No funeral arrangements have as yet been made. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
