Description	:	Thanks to F.A.G. contributor #47502769: In 1903 Charles Edward Clauff and his wife, Clara Elizabeth "Lizzie" Morgan, decided to leave their family, friends and farm near Beaconsfield, Ringgold County, IA and move to a farm near Osceola, Polk County, NE. They loaded their belongings in a lumber wagon pulled by horses. A milk cow was tied to the back of the wagon. They collected their 2 small children - John G. "Jack" Clauff who later married Jessie Key of Clarks, Merrick County NE and Minnie B. Clauff who later married Rynold Butt of Central City, Merrick County NE.... They loaded their belongings in a lumber wagon pulled by horses. A milk cow was tied to the back of the wagon. They collected their 2 small children - John G. "Jack" Clauff who later married Jessie Key of Clarks, Merrick County NE and Minnie B. Clauff who later married Rynold Butt of Central City, Merrick County NE. Their little terrier dog ran in the shade of the wagon or rode with the children in the wagon when he was tired. There was no interstate or black toped roads - just unmarked dirt roads. There was no McDonald's - just potatoes, milk, onions and an occasional rabbit or squirrel that were cooked over an open fire. There was no Super 8 - just some tattered old quilts that Lizzie spread on the ground near the wagon when they would stop for the night. Later Minnie Butt told of that journey many times. She told of laying on the quilts with her parents and brother while her father pointed out the stars and told the fables of the constellations. She recalled the peace and security she felt as she lay there on a quilt, covered with the stars and surrounded by her family. Written by Reta [Butt] Kleve - September 2008 *************** Obituary - Newspaper and Date Unknown: Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, July 30, 1947, for Charles Edward Clauff, 77, who died Sunday, July 27, 1947, in Hastings NE. following an illness of several months. The funeral was conducted at the Solt Funeral Home, Central City NE, with Rev. Lowell Jones officiating. Interment was in the Central City [NE] Cemetery. Pallbearers were William Sims, Bob Baird, Dave Anderson, Eli Wiles, Hal Fosby and Otto Butts. Flower bearers were Mrs. Dave Anderson and Mrs. William Sims. Music was furnished by Mrs. John Hruza Jr. Mr. Clauff, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Clauff, was born August 22, 1871 in Whiteside County IL. When a small boy, he moved with his parents to Iowa where he grew to manhood. He married Elizabeth Morgan at Beaconsfield IA April 19, 1896. Mr. and Mrs. Clauff, who resides on a farm in the District 50 neighborhood, have lived in Nebraska 44 years. Survivors are his wife; five children, John Clauff, Omaha NE; Mrs. Rynold Butt, Central City NE.; Mrs. C.E. Davis, Fullerton, NE.; Mrs. Frank Major, Genoa, NE.; and Marvin Clauff, Central City, NE.; one sister, Mrs. Claudia Bonham, Willard, CO; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
