Edward was born October 13, 1918, in Clay County, the son of Thomas Herbert and Elizabeth Ann Slingsby Rundle. He was born and lived on his grandfather's, John Rundle Sr., homestead with the exception of 3 years and 7 months in the army. They now own the farm. His hobbies were woodworking... Read More	Charles Edward Rundle died Saturday evening, March 15, 1997, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. Edward was born October 13, 1918, in Clay County, the son of Thomas Herbert and Elizabeth Ann Slingsby Rundle. He was born and lived on his grandfather's, John Rundle Sr., homestead with the exception of 3 years and 7 months in the army. They now own the farm. He attended 8 years at Hayes School and graduated from Clay County Community High School in 1937. He sheared sheep in his younger life, and farmed in Hayes Township until 1985. His hobbies were woodworking and fishing. Edward and Lois traveled to Hawaii for the 25th wedding anniversary. In 1983 they traveled to Scandinavia and in 1984 the continent of Europe, which included attending the Passion Play at Oberamergau in Germany, and many states in the United States. He was baptized and member of the Hayes United Methodist Church near Clay Center all his life, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee for many years, and Pastor Parish Relations. Edward was a member of the Hayes 4-H Club with sheep as his project winning many ribbons at the County and State Fairs. He won a trip to the 4-H Congress at Chicago by winning State Sheep Championship in 1938. He was P.F.C. Charles Edward Rundle, 323rd Infantry Regiment, Combat Infantryman Sharpshooter, 81st. Wildcat Division in the United States Army. He received the Bronze Star, American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Battle Stars for the Islands of Peleliu and the Philippines, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Sharpshooter Badge with Carbine Bar, Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar. Edward was among the first men to be in the invasion of Japan; however the atom bomb prevented this. He was then among the first men to occupy Japan. Edward was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Lyndon and Clifford. He married Lois Linquist October 1, 1950, and she survives of the home. He faithfully cared for her through all her illnesses. He also leaves 3 sister-in-laws, 1 brother-in-law, nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and his good 4-H friends LeRoy and Phyllis McCosh and their family, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held 10:30, Wednesday, March 19, 1997 at the Clay Center United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gene Slack officiating. A poem "A Few Things – Memories of Ed" written by Linda Cunningham was read. The Old Rugged Cross and Beyond the Sunset were sung by Maxine Habluetzel with Dee Germann as organist. Honorary casket bearers were: Clarence Weidman, Jr., Lloyd Patterson, Alvin Anderson, Benny Siebold, Carroll Roth, Kenneth Schurle, Harold Anderson, Roy Anderson, Allan Gilbert and Verl Johnson. Casket bearers were: Gordon McCosh, Dennis McCosh, James McCosh, Terry Matlack, Ron McCosh and Jeff Kough. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery with full military honors from Fort Riley. Neill-Schwensen-Rook Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements. Published Clay Center Dispatch, Tuesday, April 1, 1997, page 5.
