Charles (better known as Chuck) was born in rural Genoa on Aug. 30, 1926, to Walter and Charlotte “Lottie” (Modd) Dannelly. He was born a twin, one of 12 siblings. He attended Big Cut country grade school west of Genoa and St. Edward High School. He developed a love of horses and horseback riding early in life, and continued it throughout his long life. An early mishap on a horse left him with a permanently bent arm. He farmed with his grandfather and father and “worked out” for others in the Genoa community. When World War II came, he traveled to Kansas to enlist, but wasn’t selected for military service because of his bent arm and because farmers were needed at home to fill the nation’s breadbasket. But he was strongly patriotic and inordinately proud of the 14 Dannelly names listed on the Veteran’s Memorial at the Genoa City Park. He was instrumental in assuring that all of the family names got recorded there. He married Donna Rae Johnson on June 4, 1950. He continued to farm and six children were born to this union. He and Donna supported the 4-H livestock program and Chuck was a 4-H leader for many years. He advised his children and others at the state fair, Aksarben, Nance, Polk and Platte county fairs and Genoa Pawnee Days. They earned a bevy of ribbons and trophies. He was also active in riding and showing horses. After moving to the city of Genoa in the winter of 1969, Chuck started working at the Genoa Co-op. He was always available to fill an empty gas tank, or change a flat tire. He kept the customers there in smiles until his retirement in 1989. To celebrate his retirement, he led a contingent of family and friends on a 100-mile Centennial Trail Ride from Atkinson to Elgin. The stories and memories that ride generated are the stuff of legends! The next year he helped lead another 100-mile ride to Creston’s centennial celebration. He was also active in trail rides at Petersburg, Palmer, Halsey, McCook and many other rides around the State. He rode in the Mormon Trail Reenactment Ride and made many new friends there. He rode on many a River City Roundup. Nearly every weekend would find him riding his beloved horse “Duke” at the head of a ride somewhere. In addition to the “big” rides, he also led many rides around Genoa’s backroads and along the canal during the week. He enjoyed sharing his love of horses with neighborhood children and even set up a walker for his Shetlands on his back lot and taught many neighborhood children to ride “all by herself.” Standard payment for a riding lesson was “either a cookie or a kiss.” For many years, Chuck’s Shetland ponies stood in for Santa’s reindeer when Santa Claus came to town. Chuck was an enthusiastic member of the Lion’s Club and was recently honored for his 45 years of membership in that organization. He held many positions there and could always be counted on to help serve the alumni dinners. He volunteered at the Genoa U.S. Indian School and Genoa City Museum and was an ambassador of goodwill to all who met him. Chuck gave his first gallon of blood in 1956 and was a lifelong Red Cross blood donor. He rarely missed a local blood donation until well into his 80s. He was a longtime member of the Genoa Methodist Church and served in numerous positions there. Chuck loved to dance and if he wasn’t riding a horse, he could often be found at a community dance. He was frequently seen at the Flying V or Starlite dances and socials. In recent years, Chuck presided over gatherings in his backyard under his favorite shade tree. As his health began to decline, friends and family would gather there with him to toss balls for the neighborhood dogs or swap tales and share memories. He is survived by five children, Cathleen (Charlie) McCranie of Herndon, Virginia, Ronald (Dorothy) Dannelly of Cadiz, Kentucky, Warren (Brenda) Dannelly of Louisville, Kentucky, Diane Dannelly of Lincoln and Bruce (Rose) Dannelly of Columbus; daughter-in-law, Joy Dannelly of Columbus; 14 grandchildren, Raymond Dannelly of Columbus, James (Molly) Dannelly of Omaha, Jennifer (Shawn) Taylor of South Riding, Virginia, Jonathan (Krissa) McCranie of Surprise, Arizona, Jill (Paul) Prishivalko of Great Falls, Virginia, Jared Severson of North Bend, Cheryl Dannelly of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Charles and Anna Dannelly of Cadiz, Kentucky, Zachary and MacKenzie Dannelly of Louisville, Kentucky, Haily Anderson of Lincoln and Colton and Victoria Dannelly of Columbus; seven great-grandchildren, Emily, Chelsea and Avery Taylor, Evelyn, Camille and Maya Prishivalko and Grayson McCranie; brother, Morris (LaRue) Dannelly of Enterprise, Utah; sister-in-law, Lucille (Glenn) Dannelly; brothers-in-law, Don (Lois) Pearson and Del (Alyce) Harsh; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Earle, Chester, Frances (Inness), Hazel (Harris), Kenneth, Everett “Bill,” Glenn, Lois (Pearson), Alyce (Harsh) and Charlotte (infant); and son, Edwin.
