By 1893, Charles was living in Saline County, Nebraska. The family were farmers. Minnie Bell James was born December 28, 1873 near Western, Saline County, to Jesse and Hannah James. Minnie's mother died when she was very young. She was raised by an aunt and uncle near Sabetha, Kansas. She spent much of her time with outdoor chores. Charles Wattles and Minnie James were married September 21, 1893 at Wilber, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm near Western in Saline County. They moved to Beaver Crossing about 1907 and lived in the east part of town for a time before going to a farm northwest of Beaver Crossing. Later, they farmed east of the town until 1920. In 1920 the Wattles family moved to an acreage of 10 acres 1 1/2 miles west of Beaver Crosing where they started truck gardening, raising a variety of vegetables and fruit. Two flowing wells irrigated the long rows of garden crops. The daughters assisted with the care of the long vegetable rows. When complaining of being tired, the mother would promise a fishing expedition for the evening, no matter how tired she might be. The caught fish were dressed by lantern light. Next morning before rising, the fishermen could smell the fish being fried for their breakfast. In a little Model T Ford pickup, Charles delivered vegetables and fruit to surrounding towns. Mother and the girls delivered vegetables to Utica in the Model T Ford. Customers also came to the home for produce. The children attended the Beaver Crossing school. Irene, Leta, and Edna graduated from the high school. After retirement, Charles and Minnie remained on the acreage until about 1950 when they moved into Beaver Crossing. Charles and Minnie were the parents of five daughters: Gertie Bell born February 5, 1895 near Sabetha, Kansas and died February 19, 1899 at Beaver Crossing. Rhoda Arilla, born April 1, 1897 near Western, married Clarence Lawrence Harris at Seward as he was going overseas to France. They had one son, Loren. Ethel Irene, born February 18, 1907 at Beaver Crossing married Wesley Rohren December 3, 1927 at Geneva, Nebraska. There were four children: Bonnie Hagemose, Donald Wesley, Charles William (Bill) and Karen Hines. Leta Margurette born July 14, 1898 at Beaver Crossing married James Lee Hall December 31, 1929 at Beaver Crossing. Edna Pauline, born November 23, 1915 at Beaver Crossing, married Theodore August Ihde June 17, 1937 at Seward. They have two sons, Richard and Kent. They make their home in Anchorage, Alaska. Charles died November 17, 1955 and Minnie, May 11, 1955. They were buried in Beaver Crossing Cemetery. (Written and submitted by Leta Wattles Hall)
