The Viquesney family came from Paris, France to do work on the capitol building at Washington DC was what I read that EM Viquesney told others, but there is no proof of that, although many of the Viquesneys were great sculpturers. Charles E. Viquesney was a boy when he accompanied his parents to the United States, and the family home was established in the vicinity of the town of Belington, Barbour County, WV. His father, Charles Alfred Sr became a farmer in Barbour County. Charles Alfred Viquesney and his wife lived in Barbour County, WV for a while, then returned to France, and they both died in France. Charles married Mary Ann Row (1832-1919). Mary Ann was the daughter of Benjamin Row (1808-1879) and Sarah F. Rinehart Row (1810-1866). This couple had 11 known children: Eliza Virginia Viquesney (1852-1929), Charles Viquesney (1853-1871), Benjamin Viquesney (1855-1927), Sarah Viquesney (1856-1931), Polly Viquesney (1858-1939), Louis N Viquesney (1860-1935), Julia Frances Viquesney (1864-1931), Laura Belle Viquesney (1866-1931), Jules Augusta Viquesney (1869-1950), Julia Frances Viquesney (1871-1936) and Birdie Viquesney (1873-1922). On 4 April, 1880, Charles E. received his naturalization papers, becoming a citizen of the USA. 1st person naturalized in Barbour County, WV, USA was Charles Alfred Viquesney in 1847 (Charles Emile's dad and granddad of the creator of the Viquesney Doughboy (EM Viquesney). That information is in the book called "History of Barbour County" (1968). In the Civil war period Charles E. Viquesney, Jr., was conducting a blacksmith shop in the present Belington neighborhood, and he was also identified with farm enterprise in this county for many years. During the last fifteen years of his life he was a traveling salesman for the monument establishment of Fred A. Lang & Company of Clarksburg, and in this connection he became well known throughout the state. He was a stanch Union man in the Civil war period and was a republican in politics. He died in 1896, at the age of seventy-two years, and his widow passed away in May, 1919, at the venerable age of eighty-four years. Both are buried at the Hillyard Cemetery in Junior, Barbour County, WV. Some of their children and grandchildren are buried at the K & P Cemetery near Hillyard Cemetery.
