Foster was born on June 12, 1913, in Estelline, South Dakota, the son of Ben and Ida (Wilken) Foster. He died on Friday, August 23, 1991, at McKennan Hospital at the age of 78 years, 2 months, and 11 days. Ernie spent his early years and received his education in Estelline, and was a graduate of Estelline High School in 1933. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Hooker on June 12, 1935, in Estelline. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Ernie was employed as a custodian and the maintenance department at Estelline High School until his retirement in 1983. Ernie is a member of the United Church of Christ, the Masonic Lodge since 1943 (Master of the Lodge for two years) and a member of El Riad Shriners. He taught Sunday School for many years, and was very active in the church. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle of Estelline; one daughter, Mary Mae, and her husband, Larry Fisher of Austin, Minnesota; one son, Merwin, and his wife, Cheryl of Sheldon, Iowa; four grandchildren, Brad, Jill, Bryan Fisher, Nicholas Foster, and two brothers, Lloyd Foster of Estelline, and Wayne Foster of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
