Rep. 11 Oct. 1934 Charles Eugene Armstrong Charles Eugene Armstrong was born the eighth day of April, 1893 on a farm on Home Prairie, Van Buren county, Iowa. On Thursday, August 30, 1934, after an illness of ten days, he passed away at the University hospital in Iowa City. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. William Armstrong who are at present living in Mt. Sterling, Iowa. His two sisters survive him: Nina, Mrs. Otto White, living in Canyon, Texas and, Mildred, Mrs. William Seamon, whose home is at Huntsville, Arkansas. Besides these there are many more dear and close relatives who share this bereavement. The date of his birth and the date of his death are but the open and closed doors in the life of "Gene" Armstrong. Between these, shine the record of a man all knew to be gracious and honorable and a conscientious worker, a man with a ready smile that came from a heart big with love and friendliness. "Gene", by which name his folks and friends knew him, learned his A B C's in the country schools near Mt. Sterling. Later, he came to Keosauqua, to enroll in the high school, from which he graduated with honors in 1911. He returned to the country to teach in various rural schools, and later, became principal of the Mt. Sterling grade school. On the seventeenth of January, 1914, he was united in marriage to Clara Kerr whose home was in Mt. Sterling, and who, likewise, taught the lower grade of the school at the time Gene was principal. To these two was born, Dec. 2, 1918, a son, Claire Eugene, christened for both his father and mother. With the coming of Claire, this little household took on an added importance, and soon became familiarly known as Gene and Clara and Claire, a loving trinity. Forsaking the life of a teacher, Gene became interested in politics, and was elected county auditor in 1923, and held this office for eight years, ranking with state oficials(err) as one of the best auditors in the state. He has always lived in Van Buren county, with the exception of the last three years, when his work as a state examiner took him away from home. He was a member of both the Masonic Lodge, and of the Eastern Star Chapter in Keosauqua, and in both Orders, held important offices at various times. In his religious life, he joined first the Methodist church at Mt. Sterling, later transferring his membership to the Congregational church in Keosauqua, during the pastorate of the Rev. Paul Jackson. These are the simple facts of the life of Charles Eugene Armstrong, but interwoven with the tender forces that controlled his every act, these facts reveal the simple greatness of a full life, which was bro't to all too short a close. Friends and family grieve, but, between the interrupting tears, there is happiness in the memories we cherish of the living presence of Gene Armstrong. He was a delightful man to meet both socially and in business circles. Death makes many things significant - qualities we fail to notice in life. Perhaps the most outstanding trait of Gene Armstrong, is his love of home and family. You knew his home wherever he lived. It was always trim and well-kept and attractive showing the watchful care of the owner. He was devoted to his wife and son. Thru babyhood to the young manhood of his boy, he has watched every step of the way, a faithful and wise guide. But, more than that, he has been big brother to the smaller Gene, and between the two, there exists a bond that is not severed by separation. Since the month of May, Clara and Claire have been with the husband and father, living in a cottage on a small lake near Eldora, at which town his work detained him. Here it was he was taken ill. As the disease progressed, he was taken to Iowa City for more careful treatment. When word came that he was so very sick, and that the illness was infantile paralysis, there were many anxious hearts waiting for each message that came from the sick room. The later reports carried a hope that he might recover and be brought home, but, on Thursday, towards the end of the day, the serious disease which held him a patient, crept to the brain, and death claimed him at eleven o'clock on that same evening. His wife and his son were with him as he closed his eyes in that rest that is quieter than sleep. So many tragic deaths have saddened this small community within the last few months, that the sharp and sudden illness that took Gene Armstrong from the midst of friends and from the sacred circle of his loved ones, adds another ache to burdened hearts, and we wonder why we must carry the grief. Only Christ can explain each separate anguish. But this we know, "The world is not conclusion; A sequel stands beyond, Invisible, as music, but Positive as sound. Source: Van Buren Co.
