He and his older brother, James were out fixing a fence and had taken along the rifle. As near as could be learned James was getting into the wagon and had the gun under his arm, Charles reached for it the trigger caught on the clothing of the older boy, discharging the shell. The bullet entered the boy's side, ranged downward and lodged in front of the back bone just above the pelvis. Dr. Thelen was called and had the boy moved immediately to the Columbus hospital for an operation. He appeared to rally at first and it was hoped the shot would not prove fatal, but the deadly bullet had plowed its way into vital parts of the body and the young man passed away Wednesday evening about eight o'clock. The body will arrive here this afternoon and the funeral will probably be held (tomorrow) Friday morning. `````````` January 4, 1923, p. 1, col. 5 CARD OF THANKS We wish to return our sincere thanks to the many friends who with such unswearing kindness allotted us during the time our boy was critically wounded and after he was caled to rest.
