Haviland, 86, died on Nov. 19, 2011, at Hospice House. He was born Aug. 4, 1925, in Mt. Pleasant to Francis Bell and Margaret Elizabeth Carpenter Haviland. He married Opal E. McDowell on Aug. 1, 1948. She preceded him in death on Nov. 10, 2011. A graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, he attended Iowa Wesleyan College, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. During World War II, he was in the U.S.Army Air Corps serving in the Philippines and the Occupational Forces of Japan. He was a Second Lt.,Artillery, in the Iowa National Guard. He worked in the Burlington Ordnance Plant, was a carpenter and worked as a territory manager for Wyeth Labortories 33 years, retiring in 1987. He was an active maember of the Trinity Episcopal Church. Surviving are three daughters, Connie(John)Willis of Aiken, S.C., Linda(Doug)Propp of Bloomfield and Marta(Tom)Shafer of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren, Jeff Willis and Kelley Rigdon, both of Evans, Ga., Erika Ellis of Albuquerque, N.M., Sarah Mattingley of Ft. Collins, Colo., Joe Mattingley of Ankeny, Jamey Shafer of Astoria, N.Y.,Andrew(Cresta)Shafer of Streamwood, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, Jonah and Jacob Rigdon, Liviya Harmon, Emma and Iris Shafer; two sisters, Phyllis(Ted)Stull of Canyon, Texas and Virginia Eland of Venice, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews who called him "Uncle Pete." He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Rev. Donald F. Haviland; two sisters, Mary Louise Wickham and Margaret Estelline "Essie" Tayler. Funeral sevices will be 1 pm Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church; with Rev. Vincent Bete officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B.Nelson Post 3 of the American Legion. Visitation begins at 10 am Tuesday at Reece Funeral home with the family present from 5-7 pm Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or Hospice House of Wapello and Davis Counties, Ottumwa, Iowa.
