Deceased is survived by four sons, Thomas, Oliver, Issac, and Perry Ferree, and two daughters, Huldy Stewart and Emma Bryan. Biograghical Obituary - Oskaloosa Newspaper Charles Ferree was born in Dauphlin County, Pennsylvania in 1827 of Reuben and Mary Ferree and died at the home of his son Oliver, in Madison township, When ten years of age, the family moved to Stark County, Ohio and resided there until the deceased was 19 years of age. In 1843 the young man came to Washington County, returning for a while to his Ohio home, but the attachment was even then formed which drew him to an early return which he did in 1844, this time to Mahaska County and for over 60 years a continual resident. 20 years in Scott township and the remainer in Madison township. He grew with the county and was a staunch supporter in everything relating to her best goal. He was a man of decided convictions and well posted on current events of the day. He worked year after year for seven to ten dollars a month meanwhile storing up a vast amount of information relative to the early stuggles of proud Mahaska, information of value to the present generation. In 1850, Mr. Ferree was united in marriage with Miss Lucy Middleton, a faithful wife and loving mother who answered the summons to "come home" in April 1892. Until the encrouchment of old age compelled him to quit, Mr. Ferrees chief occupation was stock buying and in that capacity, "Uncle Charley" Ferree was familiar in all the country roundabout and hundreds of cars of hogs found their way to eastern markets through his hands. In the early days, he would drive them to Keokuk or Burlington, 1000 in a drove and later ship, and later ship 260 cars per year, besides shipping numerous other cattle, thus making him by far the most extensive stock shipper of Mahaska County, his farm meantime being operated by his sons. In religions creed, Mr. Ferree was an Episcopal Methodist, as was his wife, and the ordinance of the church of that church was so fully followed, that their children became members through the rite of baptism in early infancy. Grandfather Ferree was the last of a family of seven children and was at the time of his death the oldest resident of south Madison and one of the earlist pioneers of the county. "Yes,truly, one by one they are passing over." and they are steadily growing fewer. Those sturdy pioneers who struggled and toiled and through great tribulations made Iowa what she is today. The children who are left to keep green the memory of this aged patriarch, are still residents of this county and are as follows; Thomas, Oliver,Isaac, Perry, Mrs. Hulda Stewart and Mrs. Emma Bryan, the youngist daughter, Mrs. Nora Stanley, passed on several years ago. There are also seventeen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral, which was largely attended was held from Madison church at 1:00pm. Rev. Guthrie taking for the subject of his discourse the last 2 CONC six verses of the sixth chapter of Hebrews, extorting his hearers to lay hold of the hopeset before us. Some choice selections were beautifully rendered by Madison singers, appropriate to the occasion. Relativesin attendence from a distance were Miss Ada Kendig from Ottumwa, and Miss Dell Kendig. J.C. nad Fred Butler and wife from Leighton, neices and nephews of the deceased, Joe Stanley, of Pekay, Mrs. Letchly, Mr and 2 CONC Mrs. Bryan, of New Sharon, and Mrs. Stewart and son Charles of Caswick. Many were the friends who followed the body to its last resting place in beautiful Madison cemetery, where he now sleeps beside his wife, and close to his martyred grand-daughter, Lois Benson.
