Compton was issued a deed to Allotment 85, consisting of 167.63 acres, on February 14, 1919, per Book 172, Page 377, recorded at the Butte County Recorder's Office in Oroville. They mortgaged the land for $5100 on March 21, 1919, and sold it to Tom Chase Mead and Lucille Johnson Mead on July 14, 1919. The Chico Enterprise, Friday Evening, April 19, 1929: "Fatally Burned, Man Drives Auto to Obtain Air; Dies. An explosion caused by pouring kerosene on a fire in a chicken house on the Charles Compton ranch two miles north of Ord shortly before 5 o'clock this morning caused the death of Compton in the Enloe hospital at 2 o'clock this afternoon. "Compton had about 800 little chickens which he was attempting to keep warm by means of a stove in the brooding pen. He arose early to rekindle the fire which he thought had died out and in order to hasten the process started to pour kerosene from a five gallon can when some hidden coals caused the explosion which scattered burning kerosene over his clothing. "He ran from the house and rolled in a barley field nearby and succeeded in extinguishing the flames. Jumping in his car he drove two miles to the ranch of a neighbor, who rushed the victim to the Enloe hospital. "Practically all Compton's clothing was burned off and he suffered severe burns on his legs and abdomen. "Compton was born in Michigan 46 years ago and came to Chico when four years of age. Twenty-two years ago he moved to the ranch near Ord, where he has since resided. "Surviving is the widow, Mrs. Mabel Shannon Compton; two children, Clifton and Charles Jr.; the father, Daniel L. Compton and two brothers, Herman and Luman Compton of Durham. Funeral arrangements are being completed by Bicknell & Moore." ~~~ 46-year-old Charles Frank Compton was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on April 22, 1929 (there is no marker).
