Charles Geiser was born June 4, 1914, four and one-half miles west of Big Sandy. He was raised by his grandparents in Iowa during his early childhood years. Returning to his father's homestead, he attended Big Sandy Elementary school up until the nineth grade, when he began helping his father full time on the farm. Charles met and married Marie Schmid of Warrick on Nov. 26, 1943. Shortly after the wedding, Charles was called to serve his country during World War II. During the war he served under General Patton in Germany. Returning home he and and Marie started their lives together and began their family, with Al being born Dec. 5, 1946. On Sept. 27, 1949, Charles lost his leg while receiving propane on his farm. The loss of his leg did not stop Charlie. He continued to raise his family, with Vernon born Mar. 20, 1950 and his daughter Joyce being born on Jan. 15, 1952. Charlie was a hard working man, who continued to move forward although facing cancer in 1959. This did not sway him from continuing to farm. Charlie and Marie were often found picking raspberries and gardening together. Charlie enjoyed playing cards, hunting and fishing, whenever he had the time or found a good fishing hole. Charlie lost his wife in November of 1983 just short of their fortieth wedding anniversary. He continued to enjoy his farming and his family, especially his seven grandchildren. This past year had been difficult for Charlie.. He had knee surgery in Oct. that put him in a nursing home for eight weeks. He had just been able to come home for about a month when he entered the Fort Harrison Veterans' Hospital with a bowel blockage. He was not able to fight the infection and after 5 weeks in ICU, Charlie passed away on Apr. 9, 1989. He is survived by his children, Al of Chinook, Vern of Bakersfield, Calif., and Joyce Carpenter of Billings; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services at Rohrer Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial in Big Sandy cemetery.
