Hix, 81, Dies January 24 in Nebraska Charles George Hix was born on August 17, 1887, at Dysart, Iowa, and passed away at the Gordon Memorial Hospital in Gordon, Nebraska, about 5 o'clock on the afternoon of Friday, January 24, 1969, aged 81 years, 5 months and 7 days. He had been hospitalized earlier with the flu while visiting in Iowa, as well as in Gordon, and had been readmitted to the hospital on Friday after suffering a heart attack. One of 12 children of Henry Hartman Hix and his wife Veronica nee Kessler, Charles spent his early years in Iowa and South Dakota. The family resided in the Mitchell area for a time but later homsteaded near Murdo, South Dakota, where Charles gew to manhood. In 1913 he moved to the Gordon, Nebraska area where he was to spend the remainder of his life. During World War l he served his country as a truck driver with the 10th Ammunition Training Squad. After the Armistice he returned to Gordon where he farmed with his brother Joe just across the line in Cherry County. In the spring of 1947 he retired from farming and moved into Gordon to the home at 412 Elm Street where he was to spend his last years. On March 3, 1921 he was united in marriage to Miss Elva Sees in Gordon. To this union four children were born: two sons, Clifford H., of Gordon, and an infant son who passed away May 22, 1922; and two daughters, Alta (Mrs. Jim Featherston) of Gordon and Irene (Mrs. Ardell Mueller) of Thurston, Nebraska. Mrs. Hix preceded her husband in death on March 21, 1964. Ten of Charles' brothers and sisters also are deceased. Besides his three living children he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Robert Wolcott of Riverside, California; five grandsons; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Charles was baptized in the Lutheran Church early in life in Iowa and later spent many years as a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Gordon. In the early 1950's he became a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Gordon and assisted in the building of Trinity's house of worship. He was also a longtime member of the American Legion Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 28, 1969 at 2 p.m. MST at Trinity Lutheran Church, 8th and Elm, Gordon, Nebraska, conducted by the interim pastor, the Rev. Edward A. Johnson of Hay Springs, Nebraska. Interment followed in the Gordon Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in Mr. Hix's name at Trinity Lutheran Church.
