He was the third child in a family of five, Henry Carl (b Jan. 23, 1878), Albert Gustav (b June 30, 1879), Carl Gustav Paul, Auguste (b Aug. 1889) and Minnie (b Jan. 3, 1892). Read More	Carl (Charles or Charlie) Gustav Paul Engel was born June 27, 1882 in Germany to Heinrich (Henry) Gustav and Anna Marie Louise Karoline Engel née Köte. He was the third child in a family of five, Henry Carl (b Jan. 23, 1878), Albert Gustav (b June 30, 1879), Carl Gustav Paul, Auguste (b Aug. 1889) and Minnie (b Jan. 3, 1892). On Jan 9, 1889, Henry Gustav (age 38), Anna (age 40) and sons Henry Carl (age 9), Albert Gustav (age 8) and Carl Gustav Paul (age 6) left Hamburg, Germany on the steamship Australia and arrived in New York, USA on Jan 28, 1889. Their last residence in Germany was listed as Blockwinkel, Brandenburg, Prussia. In 1897, Henry Gustav, Anna and their 5 children lived in Brainard Twp, Brown County, SD. His younger brother Frederick Gustav and their mother Anna Dorothea Engel nee Göritz lived in the same home in Brainard Twp. An older brother, Carl Heinrich, resided, with his family, in Canby, Minnesota, USA. In 1900, Carl, (age 18), lived with his parents and siblings in Augusta Township, Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota, USA. In 1905, Henry Gustav, Anne Dorothea, Albert Gustav (age 25), Carl G.P. (age 23), Auguste (age 10) and Minnie (age 8) were living on Sec27-T118N-R48W-W5M south of Revillo town, Adam Township, Grant County, South Dakota, USA. In 1909, Carl obtained a homestead (NE31-12-2-W4M) in the Irvine District, AB. In 1911 he lived with his brother Albert Gustav Engel and his family in Medicine Hat, AB. After he moved to his homestead, he lived in a cave, which was still visible in 1991. Later he built a bachelor shack. When he left his cave (home), and didn't expect to return home before dark, he would light a lantern and raise it up on a pole, so he would be able to find it on his return. In the winter when it snowed and drifted during the night, in the morning he would have to shovel the snow into the cave to get out. Carl never married. Carl, age 38, passed away on Nov. 25, 1918 during the Flu Epidemic and was interred in Saint George's Parish Cemetery (SW36-11-3-W4M), located approximately one half mile south of Irvine, AB on Range Road 31A. Obituary Carl G. P. Engel departed this life 12:30 Saturday morning. He died of pneumonia following influenza. He was brought into the hospital Friday afternoon but no hope was held out for him and he passed away a few hours later. His only relatives, his brother Albert Engel and family were too ill to attend the funeral. He was buried in St. George's cemetery at 8 o'clock Sunday, Rev. P. Copeland Jerrold officiating.
