On Jan 9, 1889, Henry Gustav (age 38), Anna (age 40) and sons Henry Carl (b Jan. 23, 1878), Albert Gustav and Carl Gustav Paul (b Jun. 27, 1882) left Hamburg, Germany on the steamship Australia and arrived in New York, USA on Jan 28, 1889. In 1897, Henry Gustav and family lived in Brainard Township, Brown County, South Dakota, USA. His younger brother Frederick Gustav and their mother Anne Dorothea Engel nee Goeritz lived together in Brainard Township. An older brother Carl Heinrich, resided in Canby, Minnesota, USA with his family. In 1900, Albert, (age 20), lived with his parents and siblings in Augusta Township, Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota, USA. In 1905, Henry Gustav and Anne Marie and their children Albert Gustav (age 25), Carl G.P. (age 18), Auguste (age 10) and Minnie (age 8) were living on Sec 27 - T118N - R48W –W5M south of Revillo town, Adam Twp, Grant County, SD. Albert was a farm hand. Albert married Theodora Linda Christina Laasch in September 1908, in New Rockford, ND. In 1910, Albert worked as a railway section foreman based in Glover, James River Valley Twp, Dickey County, ND and lived there with Theodora and their sons Alfred Carl (b Mar 16, 1909) and Edwin Martin (March 12, 1910). His father Henry Gustav (age 59) also temporarily lived with them and worked as a railway laborer. Albert Gustav moved with his family to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada in the winter of 1910 - 1911. They obtained a homestead (NW28-12-2-W4M) in 1911, but stayed living in Medicine Hat for 2 years at the 900 block of 7th Avenue, now Kingsway. In 1913, they moved out to the homestead and erected a two-room sod house, and added a frame structure on to it in 1926. For a time, Albert cycled 6 miles to Irvine to work as a mortar mixer to supplement their farm income. At times, he also worked for the Canadan Pacific Railway as a section man. During the dirty 30's the Engel’s well was the only source of water in the vicinity and neighbors watered their livestock from it. There was a windmill on the well, but if there was no wind everyone pumped water by hand. The well never went dry. While living on the homestead, Albert and Theodora had seven additional children: Nettie Dora (b July 7, 1912), Violet Luella (b Oct. 21. 1916), Walter Alvin (b Feb. 18, 1918), Junuis (June) Viola (b June 20, 1920), Allan Albert (b Sept. 19, 1922), Percy Grover (b Sept. 5, 1924) and Nina Linda (b Nov. 19, 1929). Albert, age 59, passed away, of cancer, on May 21, 1939 and was interred in Zion Cemetery near Many Islands Lake (NW12-13-2-W4M). On June 25, 1960 Albert’s body was disinterred and reburied in Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat, AB. Theodora, age 71, passed away on May 18, 1962 and was interred beside Albert.
