Burnett was born at Ashtabula, O., April 6, 1837. He died at his home in Geneva, Neb., at 4:30 p.m., Monday, March 31, 1930, aged 92 years, 11 months and 24 days. Mr. Burnett’s early life was spent in Ohio. At the age of twenty-three he went to New Orleans, at which place he was forced to leave at the outbreak of the Civil War, to prevent being drafted into the Confederate Army. He removed to LaSalle, Ill., at which place he enlisted in the Union Army, February 26, 1864. He was assigned to the Sixty-fourth Illinois Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal and later to Sergeant. Mr. Burnett served until the end of the war. At Cheraw, S. C., in an explosion of a sack of ammunition, he was severely burned on the hands and face, but did not go to the hospital. He was in all the engagements of his regiment from the first, which was at Resaca, Ga., until the last at Bentonville, N.C. He was also in the “march to the sea” and through the Carolina’s and in the grand review at Washington, D. C. He was always at his post of duty, achieving a gallant record for meritorious service and soldierly conduct. Mr. Burnett was united in marriage to Mary B. Brenneman of Tonica, Ill., March 17, 1868. To this union were born two daughters, Lillian Amy, now Mrs. Ira Heath of Geneva, Neb., and Hattie Evelyn, who departed this life January 4, 1902. Mr. and Mrs. Burnett lived at Chatsworth, Ill., until 1891, when they moved to Geneva, Neb., where they have since resided. Mr. Burnett was for many years active in the affairs of the community. He was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church, having been a member of the Board of Trustees for twenty-five years. He was a member of the Wilson post, G. A. R., having served three times as commander. He also served as commander of two posts at his former homes in Illinois. He was a member of Geneva Lodge no. 79 and served as treasurer of that lodge for thirty-two years, retiring two years ago because of his age. Mr. Burnett was elected township clerk in 1896. He served two years and then was elected township treasurer, serving in that office more than twenty years. He was appointed a member of the County Soldier’s relief Commission in 1904 and served until 1928. He served as secretary of the Fillmore County Agriculture Society in 1893 and 1894. He was a member of the Geneva Board of Education for about ten years.In all of his public trusts, he rendered a full measure of service. He is survived by his wife and daughter, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, besides many friends who held him in great esteem. The funeral was held at 2:30 Wednesday, April 2, at the Geneva Methodist church. Rev. Harold C. Capsey officiated. Interment was at the Geneva cemetery with the Masonic order in charge at the grave.
