Monroe, south of town Monday, Jan. 20, 1913 at 10 a.m. Death was caused by a general breakdown due to old age. He was born in Patterson, NJ, Feb. 20, 1834. He would have been 79 years of age next month. He was the son of Captian Charles Harris, a member of Congress under William Henry Harrison, his mother was Rebecka Auket, daughter of Lord Auket, of Scotland. He lived in Joliet, IL before coming here, where he owned and ran an oatmeal mill. He moved to this city 30 years ago, and conducted a barber shop on Seneca St. At the breaking out of the war, he enlisted in an OH regiment, his term lasting but three months. Following his discharge, Mr. Harris re-enlisted and served until almost the close of the war, when he was transferred to the Eleventh KY Calvary. Here he advanced until at the time of discharge, he ranked as Major. In 1882, Mr. Harris moved with his family to this city. Several years ago his wife died and since then he has lived with relatives or at the Soldier's Home in Marshalltown. Until last year, Major Harris was very active for a man of his years, and until but a short time ago, he was able to walk about. The remaining members of the family are two daughters and six sons. They are as follows: Charles H. Harris, of this city; Mrs. I. W. Monroe, also of this city; Walter J. and Edward, both of Spokane, Washington; George H. of Pittsburg, PA; Ilo C., of Pheonix, AZ; and Louise, aged 15 and Harold, aged 11, who are in the orphan's home in Davenport, IA. The funeral was held at the Universalist Church. Rev. McLaughlin officiated and the remains were interred in Graceland Cemetery.
