Hoeft, 72 years old, and a pioneer tailor of this city, died at the St. Anthony hospital Friday morning at 1 o'clock after an illness extendng over a long period of time. The cause of his death was hardening of the arteries. For the last five months he had been under treatment at the hospital, where it was hoped that skilled care would prolong his life. Until Mr. Hoeft was seized with illness he took an active part in the growth and improvement of the city and had served Carroll as a member of the board of education, as a councilman and until late years as a member of the library board. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, April 6, 1850, and came to this state when 18 years of age. His marriage to Miss Bertha Schollmeier took place in Davenport, Ia., in 1874. Thirty-seven years ago Mr Hoeft opened a tailor shop in this city. He was a master at his work and prospered in his business. Several years ago, seeing the need of a cleaning and tailoring shop, he opened the Unique Cleaning establishment. This business was bought by Thompson & Wigren three year ago, when Mr. Hoeft began to fail in health. Being exceedingly ambtious, he refused to believe he was retiring from business but held to the thought that his health would improve and he would again be an active business man of the city. Besides the wife, Mr. Hoeft is survived by eight children, four sons and four daughters: Edward Hoeft, of Davenport; Joe Hoeft, of Waterloo; Leo Hoeft, of Los Angeles, Calif.; 0.L. Hoeft, of Lexington, Ky.; Mrs. J.C. O'Donnell, of Carroll; Mrs. Ward Schwaderer, of Rockwell City; Mrs. Fred F. Collison, of Carroll; and Miss Lillian Hoeft, of Carroll. All the children were present at the funeral, which was held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at Sts. Pete and Paul's church. Mr. Hoeft was member of the Knights of Columbus and the members attended the funeral in a body.
