"The Cambridge City (IN) Tribune, Thursday, January 16, 1930 DESPONDENCY LEADS CHARLES HUDDLESTON TO TAKE HIS LIFE SATURDAY Despondency over the death of his wife, a victim of smallpox, according to information obtained by Coroner Hiatt, is assigned as the cause of the suicide of Charles Hudleston [sic] 55, Mt. Auburn, Saturday. Following Mrs. Huddleston’s death ten days ago, the bereaved husband remained alone in the house under quarantine until last Thursday. On Saturday morning Huddleston telephoned Clifford Howard, local undertaker, asking Howard to come to his home at once. The telephone conversation over, Huddleston, it is presumed, retired to his room, removed his watch and other effects from his pockets, placed them on his dresser, and shot himself through the heart with a shotgun. Howard hurried to keep his appointment. As he was entering the front yard of the Huddleston home he heard the shot. Sensing the real meaning, he rushed to the room upstairs where Huddleston had said he would be and found him on the floor. He died shortly after the shot entered the body. The body was removed to the Howard funeral home here. Surviving are two sons, Henry of this city, and Kenneth of Dayton, O.; five brothers, John and Walter of Dublin; Elmer of this city, Otto of Knightstown and William of Winamac; three sisters, Anna Lawrence of Dublin, Dora thmas of Ashland, Ind., and Alice Reaths of Hamilton, Ohio. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the U. B. church, in Dublin, Rev. W. H. Ziegler of Huntington officiating. Burial beside his life in Southlawn cemetery. Thursday, January 23, 1930 In loving memory of our dear departed brother, Charley H. Huddleston, son of Henry and Sarah Jane Huddleston, was born in Wayne county, Indiana, December 2, 1873, and departed this life, Janaury 11, 1930 at his home in Mt.. Auburn, which was the old homestead, and was built in 1845 by John Huddleston, his grandfather, from brick made on the place, and in the year 1885 was bought by Henry Huddleston and Charley wanted to keep it in the Huddleston name, purchased it in the spring of 1907. Aged 57 years, 1 month and 9 days. He was united in marriage to Mina Price in the year 1900. To this union was born two sons, Kenneth of Dayton, Ohio and Henry of Cambridge City. His wife preceded him in death lacking a few hours of two weeks. His father, mother and one brother, Osia, also had gone on before. Charley was converted in his youth and renewed in a meeting held by the writer int he year 1897. He has been a life long member of the United Brethren Church and filled some of its sacred offices. He was a man of strong convictions of what he thoght was right. Clean in his habits, honest in his dealings with his fellow men, we believe he was good at heart and wanted to do what was right. He believed in Jesus as his personal saviour and friend, ad God as his heavenly Father, to giveth us richly, all things to enjoy. Many of us have heard him give in a living testimony in the house of God. When we look at the pages of this earthly life and it unfolds its experience to us, we see one page written by the hand of prosperity, peace, joy and happiness, not a single cloud to dim its lovely page, but turn another page and it is written by the hand of misfortune, sickness, sorrow, pain and death and blotted and blured [sic] by the tear drops of experience; and another page unfolds itself and we find discouragements and strang[e] happenings, and we stand and look in wonder and amazement, and as we want comfort and help, we look on every page and can see written in letters of gold, “God is love” and being such a loving God, He put[t]eth the best construction on every life. Charley was especially interested in Sabbath School and Christian Endeavor work. He leaves to mourn their loss, two sons, Kenneth of Dayton, Ohio, and Henry, two dear little granddaughters Betta Loiuse and Collie winivere. And as these two sons have been bereaved of father and mother so close together, we pray in a special way, God’s grace and help. And we can help them to live noble lives by strewing a few flowers in the pathway of life. He leaves three sisters, Alice Reeve of Hamilton, Ohio; Anna Lawrence of Dublin; Dona Reid of Ashland: Five brothers, John of Dublin, William of Winamac, elmer of Cambridge City, Etta of Knightstown and Walter of Dublin, all of Indiana, except one sister; besides a host of friends and relatives. We trust our loss is his eternal gain. He is laid to rest by his loving companion in the South Lawn cemetery, to await the glorious resurrection morning when God shall call all from their graves. We trust our brother may have part in the first resurrection, we hope to meet him in the morning just inside the Eastern gates. Funeral sermon by Rev. Zeigler from the text.
