Jane Streeter Hawks had a sister, Mary, and three brothers, William, Stevens and Charles. When Henry, the first son (known as Harry to most of us) was about 4 ½ years old, Charles Hawks left his family with Jane Hawks' parents and made a trip to America. In Jun, 1867 the family came to America, locating at Salem Marion County, Illinois. Four children were born to them while living here: Valeria C, Rowland V, Frederick P and Sarah Ann. In the year of 1873, known as the grasshopper year, they moved with their family to Wichita, Kansas. In the fall of that year they bought a farm northeast of Rose Hill, Kansas. Five children were born here; William C., Emily J., Sidney S., C. Francis and Everett A.
